Gotta say that sounds fun, though. Know where your food comes from. Everybody’s gotta eat and deserves to know what goes into producing what they are made of.
Depending on the surrounding context, it actually isn’t that bad of an idea. I do think a lot of “shit that just has to be done” is better served as collective duties instead of “let the poor people that have no choice do it”.
That being said, it often also ends up rife with corruption (see conscription/draft dodging tactics) in current contexts. And it can be used as a punishment instead of a duty.
Also, in this specific case, it would essentially be free labour in service not really of the common good, but in service of privately owned farms, which I think are romanticised a lot. Homesteading is not the standard, most are actually already pretty big, and consolidation is still the name of the game.
I am pretty sure the solution the system will land on with the current trajectory of things will be an even more intensive use of prison labour. (i.e. legal slavery)

I disagree. Hard labor in the California summer sounds awful
Not the only reason I wouldn’t wanna live in California.
Live where you can work.

Forced voting would probably have far greater positive effects on the economy and country as a whole than forced labor.
As always, a big problem with democracy is people not giving a shit.
It would definitely be a great leap forward
