    “Hi, how are you doing?”

    “I’m doing good, you?"

    "Good, you?“

    “…good?”

Thing is: No one ever listens. I work in Customer Service, I do and hear lots of greetings and goodbyes every day and most of them are just two people blabbering phrases at each other that do not at all belong together…

Service Rep: “Okay, Mr. Customer, that’d be all then? You surely want to get back to cooking for the kids as you mentioned.”
Customer: “Yep. I expect you to call me back tomorrow”
Service Rep: “Tanks, I enjoy your meal with your kids!”
    Customer: “Thanks, you too!”
    Service Rep: “I will, thanks”
    hangs up
Service Rep.: Wait…what did I just say?!

Remindes me of a book I read that contained dialogues where people did not really engage with each other but each just said what they wanted to say. It’s common irl but most books aren’t that realistic

When this happens, try to just lean in. No one really gives a shit if you misspeak or say something unexpected. Especially not with greetings or goodbyes.

Treat it as a light-hearted gaffe and people will laugh with you.

As “Person” I would find this answer way more entertaining than “it is, isn’t it?” or something to that effect
