Core war is a programming combat game, where players make MIPS-like assembly programs to fight eachother for control over a virtual system.

It’s not really MIPS-like, predating that architecture and being modelled on CISC architectures (though greatly simplified)

For a more action and arena-like variant, RobotWar was released in 1981 for the Apple II, by the creator of Castle Wolfenstein.
