You’re always supposed to wear padding under chain mail to spread out the force and keep the rings from embedding into the skin when hit.
It will also completely remove hair if worn over a hairy patch too long.

Nope chainmail shirt. If worn without something under it, every hair on your front and back will wrap around the links.
