On some flights, the airline’s chef made an appearance to serve food to fliers, who were allowed to eat off china plates with metal knives and forks — which you certainly wouldn’t be given on a flight today, unless you were in a private jet.

Funny, I had silverware and “real” plates (but probably just porcelain) around the time the article was written, and it was only business, not first class.

Anyhow, there’s no way they’d allow staff to walk around the aisle with such a knife in flight today. Risk of accidentally stabbing a passenger during sudden turbulence…

International business class still comes with metal silverware and proper plates today. First class might have a mother of pearl spoon to go with your caviar, if it’s fancy enough.

No one is rolling around a ham to carve next to your seat but international first class can still be plenty fancy on the few airlines that still do it.

Had a long flight this year (~10h) and got “real” silverware in a economy seat (but no real plates). The knife wasn’t really sharp but it did it’s job (edit: just checked my photos, it was a butter knife, can share the photo if requested)

Plot twist: they’re vegetarians enjoying traditional Scandinavian vegetarian fare of beer and shots followed by a cigarette.

A family friend once relayed a story about visiting his wife’s family in either Sweden or Denmark (I’m pretty sure it was one of those two), wherein at a meal they were drinking hard liquor. He took a shot simply when everyone else did, not wanting to seem impolite or out of place. One of his in-laws commented afterwards that he was impressed that, for an American, he drank like a Swede/Dane (again, I don’t remember which country it was)

The guy said he was barely keeping it together, and if he’d known keeping up with the rest of them was going to be impressive instead of polite, he’d’ve accepted being known as a lightweight American. XD

Together with some colleagues I was invited to the wedding of a Slovak friend. I think the father of the bride either tried to kill us, or wanted to test our German limits. So much slivovica 😵‍💫

I think he tested and approved us, the next day he gave each of us our own bottle and was a great guy. Slovakia is great, the people are, the slivovica is and the food was as well. If you ever get invited to a wedding there, don’t hesitate! And try Kofola!

For a long time (in the US at least) it was illegal for airlines to compete on price, so they could only compete on services and amenities. While the downside is that flying no longer feels like a luxury experience, the upside is that it no longer has to cost a luxury prize. It was Jimmy Carter who deregulated the airlines.

From an environmental perspective, deregulating airlines was a mistake.

Is there even a single healthy item of food or drink amongst that menagerie?

I suppose the pterodactyl leg might be it?

What’s up with this lady? Missing left hand, left forearm clipping through the front seat, fuzzy right arm bends in a weird angle, and left leg isn’t quite jiving with the upper torso.
