No worries. You might want to set it to update automatically, and then you can turn off the update if it were ever necessary. Or just remove it, if it’s very annoying to keep it around.
What would it even mean if the site got “compromised”?compromised would be a situation similar to what happened to kolektiva.social
I think automatically doing it would be the worst of the three options:
continuing as is, removing it, or automating it.
I think it’s up to you guys on what to do, since you’re the ones who have to maintain it. But it seems like it’s a hassle. Personally I appreciate it’s there, but it’s not like I share incriminating info about myself on here, so it’s not like anything would happen if the site were to be compromised.
I guess my calls for death of various heads of state might be an issue, but other than that, eh.Gotta imagine they’re so inundated with adventurism and even pettier crimes that by time they come after posters it’s because they’re bored. At which point locking you up can have a justification as an afterthought. In other words, the content of your impotent, incredible posts don’t matter because if they wanted to lock you up for your beliefs they’d just do it.

From all I can tell it’s on purpose. Someone asked about a month ago about the canary as well, and @Alaskaball@hexbear.net commented that “nothing had changed about [keeping it updated unless something happened]”
Considering they’re usually pretty good at keeping it up to date + announcing when they forgot to do so, and they’ve been pretty radio silent on both threads, I figure we can probably assume something has happened. Incidentally it’s about the same time another admin, Lyudmila left the site - for completely unrelated reasons though.
I just had food poisoning, my own goose is pretty cooked rn and it isnt very fun right now that i can barely stomach white bread and bananas… Anyways please stop making assumptions on the fly that the site’s been compromised just because we forget to update the thing. It’s all manual input and one of the lower items in priority that’s supposed to be updated monthly, manually. Don’t go into a panic again when we most likely forget next month, or the month after that, or thereon. Just ask an admin to update the thing.
The entire point of a warrant canary is that we have to make assumptions because legally you won’t be allowed to communicate honestly with us. If you just “forget” to update the warrant canary repeatedly, you’d be better off removing it entirely rather than repeatedly sending an unintended message.
Like you’re pretty much hitting the big red button that says “ALARM: THE SITE IS COMPROMISED” and then getting snippy at people for “assuming” the site is compromised
And if it’s removed there’ll be another post talking about the site being compromised.
So? You’re going to be dealing with it every month the way it’s going, so if it’s really so inconvenient to you when you basically tell your users that the site is compromised and they take it seriously, just remove the canary, take the hit once, and be done with it.

But you had already been asked a month ago, and did nothing. That’s why I got worried and thought people should be aware.
That’s the entire point of the warrant canary. Don’t call it “freaking out and spreading panic” when I react to it functioning as intended. Alarmism it is not.Consider making an announcement about being annoyed about the warrant canary say you’re going to take it down, if it ticks you off so much. It’s not really a big deal to me, but I know some people care about it.

I’m doing a bit of a bit, but theoretically the problem is feds connecting the post histories of users to their identities or something like that.
I don’t really use DMs on this site (I’ve sent like 6 ever), but that’s another thing for some users.
