Hi I’m new here. Meant to sign up for lemmy but accidently signed up for piefed. Did I make the right decision or do I need to jump ship
You made the right decision.
Consume few resources, to make it cheap to run. Many examples of federated software are bloated Rube Goldberg machines that require hefty servers and serious server administration skills, making money a constant problem.
Okay, I’m normally a fan of Goldberg devices, but it seems pretty weird that modern FV-level stuff has much bloat?
It is weird, yes.

With the age of cheap VPSs coming to an end, there’s going to be a reckoning.
A lot of my focus in the last few weeks has been on bringing down CPU usage and I’ve made good progress on that.

Thank you for all your work, there. (reminder to my idiot self to get my PayPal donation stuff set up properly on this new machine)
IIRC you’ve said it only costs ~US$20/mo for the hosting, which seems rather remarkable given how blazing-fast this instance is for me. My old admin Sunaurus was paying something like ~US$200/mo, somehow needing close to 10 servers of various types to keep Lemm.ee running, and it still wasn’t this rapid.
Yes, currently $25/mo for hosting. With the efficiency improvements I’ve done recently the server is now about 2x more powerful than necessary.
All paths lead to singularity. Some paths will fall. Travel all paths to taste the flavors and understand the journey. You will likely find that each instance is a little bit different. There are many great aspects with PieFed. The front end you choose is of bigger import than the underlying protocol. PieFed has more rich features for posting content, but the default view has small images for much of the feed and is not infinite scrolling. Lemmy is no better in that regard, but on many instances, you have the prefix web address options for Alexandrite, Photon, and an old-reddit style front end. These may give a more rich experience in a browser. This largely boils down to your awareness of how apps work on mobile devices more like entirely separate users running in sandboxes with all the same access as yourself. In other words, it depends on if you are in the cult of Graphene OS and understand the benefits of Vanadium. If you are a true believer, your network configuration and security model will place you in the camp of Alexandrite or Photon as front ends, or dealing with the limitations of images on most if not all PieFed instances. I cannot speak to the PieFed .social instance, but on LW’s PieFed it was this. For many of us, we stay where we are to moderate established communities.
No infinite scroll is a good thing
This is the PieFed promo community. Pretty sure the only correct answer here is: PieFed is the best software out there. 🚀
(But you’re probably better off not opening an entirely new post for every meme here, to let someone explain it to you… Leave a comment underneath, or read up a bit, see what the Fediverse is like. And then ask your questions about the platform in the respective communities. We also have a help community for newbie questions or technical stuff.)
