I was just thinking about how much the city has changed recently. For those of you who have been here a while, what’s the one restaurant, shop, or dive bar you miss the most? I’d love to hear some old Austin stories!
Mother’s vegetarian cafe, for the amazing food, and threadgills restaurant for the ambience, live music and Austin feel.
I’m sure I could come up with more given enough time.
Mother’s Cafe! I hear so many people mention that one. It seems like everyone has a ‘Mother’s story.’ What was it about the food there that made it so special compared to the new spots popping up? I’d love to hear more if you have them, it’s cool to piece together what the city used to look like.
The vegetarian recipes felt like they’d been passed down from the hippie days. A lot of unique plates like BBQ tofu, and excellent molé. The restaurant was a nice quiet spot, the service was great, and the dining room had an attached indoor garden complete with fish pond. On some nights they’d have music from a harpist or classic guitar player.
Mothers was great. I also miss Martin Brothers cafe.
Gurdoughs Public House for the doughnuts 😮💨
Old emos, la zona rosa, austin music hall.
