He argued that the reason so many Americans joined up to fight in the western front was to get a glimpse of those shirtless ubermensch they’d be fighting against. Never mind that the Germans were getting really rough by the time the USA showed up in the western front and also most US soldiers were drafted, and also you couldn’t pick the front you’d fight in. And that the US bodybuilder movement comes from trying to create their own gorgeous muscular bodies to emulate the Germans.

He also said Americans didn’t get horny for Soviet men the same way because they all wore thick coats all the time. The Soviets. The world champions in broadcasting oiled up, muscular athletes doing feats of strength and dexterity.

Is there like a 2 page precis? I don’t know who any of these people are. I know Hbomberguy exists but I have no context on what he does or why people listen to him. Like I need some kind of briefing, here, to even understand what kind of context to put the context in to when i get some context.

hbomberguy showed a lot of specific examples of blatant plagiarism from 4 or 5 very large youtube channels. They were basically just Googling topics every day, changing scripts/articles from “but” to “and” or “he went” to “he traveled” and then reading it off to B-roll they often also stole. Many of them were also just stealing entirely from one production, as in just recreating a documentary in its entirety. They were making hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars by stealing all this stuff. At that point it’s less of “some rando” and more like a substantial media operation ripping people off

The plagiarist stealing queer content was always getting compliments for great writing, and it turns out when they did a second pass on a script they got caught on, trying to change the words around a just a bit more, he was actually a dogshit writer

I enjoyed it. It’s rambling in terms of the overall thesis, but everything he says does have a purpose (that might not help the thesis but still means something).

It could have been a 30 minute expose, but instead, he pulled out a folder full of receipts and just started reading them verbatim into the camera.

I identify with the plagiarism YouTuber. I also don’t care about my job and see it as just a paycheck too so I do the bare minimum to make money. Like, unitonically, that’s the system we have that incentivizes us to do the least work to get paid. I’ll reserve my ire for cops and landlords, not some YouTuber who is ruining the sacred art form of YouTube content by phoning it in to get paid.

Edit: I think I see what the problem is. I only watched the part about the pyramid head cartoon plagiarizing articles, I didn’t even see anything about the other guy.

Plagiarizing much poorer queer authors while holding up a pretense of original research and further misinforming people when you speak off script because you don’t actually do any research is bad. Dude could literally just not fuck over poorer authors writing articles on blogs and such and he’d still get plenty of money.

Exactly. Making stacks off other people’s work is antithetical of the whole leftie wave we are all on. We are suppose to be openly collaborating, sharing, exchanging, coordinating, all that sort of cool stuff together. Not just private making bank and saying “I did it all myself because I"m very uniquely intelligent”

I’m trying to articulate what is arguably an even softer point politically because it to me is a stronger indictment: He could remain a full-on content mill that is just profiting off of other people’s work, but give them proper credit! He’d lose some of his personal mystique, but he’d still make a lot of money while still being incredibly lazy but without fucking those other authors over!

the guy’s not just getting a paycheck, he’s doing pretty well and even founded a (Star Citizen-esque) movie production company, all while lifting his content from marginalized authors that often struggle financially themselves (or are dead, in some cases)

I understand where you’re coming from, however I still think it’s probably uncool to bite off the work of others, especially when they themselves aren’t getting paid let alone being recognized for their work. Don’t get me wrong I’m 420.69% all for slacking on the job and doing the most you can to figure out how to do the least you can and still get paid, get your money. However, when I think it’s a slimeball move to swipe the work of other workers.

Writers and “CONTENT CREATORS®©™” are workers, and it seems like the leftie-thing to do is not jack their shit. Stealing from your boss, the professional managerial-class, MEGACORPS, all that sort of stuff is sexy and cool. Stealing the work of other katz who are just trying to make it as well seems kinda wack to me.

Especially when things like writing which is actually transformed by the person doing it. I don’t know the Marxist term or whatever, but it seems like actual work and labor going into forming ideas and getting those ideas out into the world.

I hope I don’t come as a scold or a buzzkill. Not my intention at all.

Did you watch the thing? I gotta say that you sound to me like someone whose going off of summary and here say and honestly if you haven’t seen it I encourage you to because it is hard to grasp from summary how insidious the behavior he exposes really is. It is certainly lazy but it’s also very exploitative, particularly to obscure queer historians and writers

I’d be more okay with these people phoning it in with their research if they actually credited their sources properly, most either don’t at all or barely do it.

Also this isn’t someone slacking at a corporate job, they’re making pretty damn good money by fostering a parasocial relationship with their fans. Some are even successful enough at it they can springboard it into starting their own small business ventures meaning they’re basically kulaks. And often when someone points out that their work is copy+pasted from somewhere else they sick their fandoms on them, or sometimes even get the people they copied from harassed.

My hot take here is that both Hbomber and this guy are people who are too anti-social to have jobs and who are trying to be content grifters and at the end of the day adding plagiarism to it only makes him 10% worse.

hbomber being mad at somerton is like when the democrats were doing a “how dare you sir” about the children in cages during the trump presidency.

these takes are weird, Somerton was being cited as an authority on queer topics outside of the youboob sphere, which makes his takedown a bit more bigger than a beef between online types. dude was not only a plagiarist, he was also a known falsifier. it’s just plain old academic dishonesty, the sort of thing that would make the news if this had happened on an actual campus. we’re now in an era where bonafide pundits are taking fucking video essays at face value, B-list celebs like Neil Gaiman find out Hbomb uploaded a new video hours after it gets posted. Somerton’s channel was going to be his platform towards building a movie studio ffs. we’re in a new world where youtube is mainstream and things that happen there are now felt in meatspace.

Started listening to it in the background as well, literally watching the end right now.

Summary: a long list showing some guy passing off other people’s content as his own, a lot of those other people being queer writers. Glad I watched it, but it is seriously too long.

I heard a bunch of good takes that will never get talked about like they should be. He was scamming his boss to get paid doing a terrible job. So we have to respect the hustle.

Hbomberguy posted a video about his videos so in a way he is just recycling thst same content for views again.

How hilarious would it be if our villian just copied Hbomber’s video and declined to explain thr joke?
