A Utah lawmaker is no longer pushing for public schools to display a copy of the Ten Commandments but wants to add other biblical precepts and the Magna Carta to the curriculum.
Utah teens (grade 9-12) are already often forced (by parents) into taking a full class period for Mormon learning (called Seminary). Students have to leave the school campus to go to a Mormon church owned building, often right next door, for the class as it is not permitted to be taught on campus (for obvious reasons).
The main reason for this is some countries require formal religious “training” before allowing someone to prosthelytize, so the Mormons start early to ensure kids can go on their “mission” at the fresh age of 18.
Not surprised to see them trying to slowly push stuff into the regular classroom, smhmh.
Well, that’s it. I hopped on Lemmy to pass some free time but I’m opting out and going to play video games or something. Lunacy in Utah, West Virginia, and Alabama. It’s one too many articles about the religious nutbags trampling our rights in their quest to bring about a theocratic state. See you all tomorrow.
but wants to add other biblical precepts
So the Ten Commandments is not enough for them?
I just read HB 269.
There’s a big list of hallelujah shit for Utah schools. IN GOD WE TRUST must be displayed prominently. Selecting excerpts (cherry picking for god) from the Magna Carta, the Ten Commandments, the Mayflower Compact, the pledge of allegiance, etc and displaying or distributing copies of these excerpts in public schools is an acceptable part of the curriculum. This indoctrination shall not be censored due to religious or cultural beliefs.
To answer your question, no, the 10 C’s is just a tiny piece of the dismantling of free thought. The “non-profit” church now demands to have carte blanche influence on all kids in public schools.
Horrific. Just horrific. Thanks for looking it up.
Jokes on them. They pray to Jesus, call him the son of god and make pictures depicting both Jesus and god as white men. This is all against the first three commandments.
Joke’s* on them
(Short for “The joke is on them”.)
I know you don’t care but Jesus is a facet of God, a triune entity. I could go on but it really isn’t worth it to waste effort arguing theistic concepts with atheists. Might as well try and get dry aging tips from a vegan.
But yeah, graven images is still right out.
And Jesus was certainly not a white man.
You are right. I don’t care about some comic book without pictures that’s 2000 years old.
How sad for you, it’s got some pretty good stories.
Oh, I’ve read them. Some Jesus parables are good. Comparable to some advice Gandalf has given to the hobbits.
Which isn’t surprising considering Tolkien was a devout Christian.
Making both Christian stories and Tolkien words good works for fiction. Cool!
Cute little edgelad, got any more memes today?
Mormon’s explicitly don’t believe this. They believe “God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost” are separate beings. This is why many don’t believe they are Christians.
They also believe that their leader got divine inspiration from two emerald tablets he bought from a junk dealer.
I’m muslim. Allah (swt) explicitly rejects the trinity, clarifies that He is beyond having a son as He is the creator of everything but confirms the virgin pregnancy of Mary in the Quran. All prophets were messengers who passed the revelation among their people, but they were nothing but humans. Humans who deserve the highest respect, but must not be worshipped or likened to god.
I also listened to an interview with a catholic theology professor before converting (i was agnostic at the time), where he explains how these concepts came hundreds of years after Jesuses (pbh) prophethood and they mostly came for making christianity easier to approach to pagans.
It is also not my intend to mock christians as a whole, but those who clearly abuse the message of Jesus and agressively push their religion while understanding little of it.
I am sorry you got downvoted. i am also not a fan of the know-it-all “checkmate” atheists on platforms like reddit or lemmy and wasnt before converting.
Says the know-it-all convert.
I’m not telling anyone to believe or not believe anything. I just wanted to point out the hypocricsy in those that want to plaster biblical verses over public schools.
Nah, you pointed to everyone that worships jesus and the ten commandments. Don’t act like you are not hypocritical for criticizing another religion but not your own.
I’m sorry, that i worded it poorly then. I only meant to critise those that demand the ten commandments or any other biblical text to be plastered over public schools.
Only biblical text?
Didn’t Arkansas or Mississippi already get told that they couldn’t make the ten commandments government supported. There was some Court house somewhere
Alabama
There’s no downside to just ignoring the supreme court if you want to. They e bitten off any teeth theyight have had.
Is there some kind of refugee status for people trying to get out of the state? Asking for a friend. Namely, myself.
Let me know if you find anything out - enby Furry in Texas.
I’m so happy I live in a super blue state and don’t have to worry about any of this nonsense.
Yet.
Well, if Trump gets elected that’s a different story. The handmaids tale.
A new theocratic state, just what we need in the world… right?
ISIL has been quiet for a while. Maybe this is their latest joint.
Glad I don’t live in america
Wish I didn’t…
I hope you are able to find a way to get out if you can because I don’t like how things are looking in the united states
Eh, its fine, there’s 50 states to choose from, moving between them is super easy. There’s only a handful you really want to avoid the rest of them are pretty chill.
Super
easyexpensiveNot to mention the exhaustion from hauling all your shit 500+ miles. Moving down the road is tiring enough as is.
Utah teenagers really need to know the rights granted by King John to 25 wealthy barons (later revoked) in Medieval England, for some reason.
Wait add the Magna Carta to the curriculum? Is that not already in the curriculum? It’s kind of important.
I think it was mentioned in history class when I was in school, but the actual text wasn’t there.
It’s not really that important outside of understanding what it is and the history. It’s not like our constitution, it’s just a set of laws most of which aren’t in place anymore
Yeah, this is something I’d expect to see on Moral Orel.
Time for the better Temple to bring some school dispays!
Oh lord, hallowed by thine whip, and golden is your- hold up, it’s not Biggies “10 crack commandments”? Not on my watch. Time to write a stern letter to my representative.
Erect the 10 crack commandments outside of the Utah court houses and in schools.
i wish i could inject the satanic temple into various situations at will
