Now, let us all be honest. There has only been one surf film, ever, worth the time of an auteur and that is Bruce Brown’s seminal masterpiece The Endless Summer. Others, including Point Break, North Shore, Blue Crush are cute. Others still, including Chasing Mavericks and In God’s Hands, are so offensive as to count as crimes against humanity.
None, though, has received a knee-buckling six minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. None except Nicolas Cage’s new offering The Surfer, that is.
Variety shared, “Cage appeared to be having a ball, beaming from ear to ear and waving across the room as cheers erupted around the Palais for the film, a wild, mind-bending adventure that sees the fan favorite hit the sort of deranged peaks not witnessed on screen since ‘Mandy.’ At one point he took the mic to ask how to say “eat the rat” in French — a line from the film (and likely to become a meme) — roaring “mangez le rat!” to the delight of the crowd.”
The picture, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, is said to be an homage to vintage Australian New Wave films and is receiving rave reviews.
The Hollywood Reporter declares, “There’s no point in hiring Nicolas Cage if you’re not going to let him rip with a wackadoodle, OTT performance, and he duly delivers in the sly psychological thriller The Surfer.”
Standing for 6 minutes is knee buckling? Id like to introduce them to my job.
6 minutes standing because I can? Easy-peasy
6 minutes standing in a theater clapping for some dude I’m never gonna meet (or don’t care to socialize with if we’re in similar circles) because a movie was apparently good? I mean not hard but certainly uncomfortable, in more than one way.
Aren’t they all fellow actors in the audience?
I love how Cage isn’t afraid to take roles in weird movies. Willy’s Wonderland and Mandy have been some of my favorites of his in recent years
Don’t sleep on Pig! That was as surprisingly good as I had heard.
I always have to correct people who think I love Cage ironically. Have you seen Prisoners of the Ghost Land? Another recent work from him and its amazing.
Anytime someone says he can’t act I just tell them to go watch Leaving Las Vegas. The guy is insanely good when you give him good material to work with. He just had to take anything that came his way for a while there because he makes horrible financial decisions lol.
Also, Bringing Out the Dead.
I wasn’t as bowled over by that one (and I am a big fan of Cage, Tak Sakaguchi and Sion Sono, so felt like it should have been a guaranteed hit with me) - it seemed like it was trying too hard.
Pig & color out of space were fantastic!
He’s been on a real winning streak since getting over his financial precarious streak where he was pretty much taking any gig offered.
Unironically Pig is one of my favorite movies. I do live with a chef though so anything cook/chef related I get pretty invested in. I’ll have to watch Color Out of Space
Am chef…but most chef related movies/shows I give a pass (the Bear? who the fuck cooks an entirely new dish not tasting a bit of it along the way only to taste it after plating and then go “it’s shit”… stupid ass waste of time chefs do not have) but this was just on the edge of greatness and really enjoyed it.
Okay but if you get the chance to visit Mr. Beef in Chicago I highly recommend it. Show was based off that location and parts of it were even filmed in it. The Bear nailed the vibe of the place perfectly and the food is awesome
What are your thoughts on the Menu?
Throughly enjoyed it.
Just the right amount of absurdity that really highlights the industry.
I heard he got in financial trouble and started taking any role that pays.
And I think he made the required money and doesn’t have financial issues anymore so now he picks only stuff he likes and wants to do
I think Mandy was his first movie post clearing his debt.
Dream Scenario was also pretty good. I enjoyed it
Six minites is pretty standard for Cannes though.
“minites”
This one doesn’t speak Cageian.

Such disrespect against Big Wednesday shall not stand.
Completely overlooking this masterpiece.
This link better be Surf Ninjas or you and I will have words.
