I run a motorcycle community specific to the model we ride, and unfortunately not getting much traction.

Unfortunately these communities thrive off original 1st party content, DIY fixes, new purchases, questions etc.

I’m having trouble generating that organically.

We need lemmy searches to show up in Google. Then we can name topics appropriately (read; accurately) so that they are found by more people.

Right now it’s like shouting into the abyss.

Have you tried expanding scope from a specific model to any model from that manufacturer?

I have not. I don’t want to make things more convoluted, and also there are other Make specific communities so maybe I’ll just concentrate over there.

I’m hoping !artbykids@lemmyworld.com picks up. It’s a community to post art created by kids. I know a lot of parents are proud of their kids’ artwork but don’t want to share it because they don’t know if everybody else would find it great/cute/adorable/etc. This is a positive community where any artwork by kids is welcome with positive vibes. I hope it gets more people proudly showing off their kids’ artwork, because I think kids artwork is more than just a piece of art, it’s a window into a kid’s mind.

!fantasyfootball@lemmy.world I have been posting a lot to try to get it active in time for the start of regular season. I found the same community on Reddit helpful in sourcing advice/consensus on certain players and such

Here’s a negative of your question: I’m blocking/ignoring every community that is just endless bot posts. And there are a lot of them.

You can also just turn off viewing accounts that are marked as bots

Currently focusing on !games@lemmy.world and !games@sh.itjust.works which are pretty much the same thing. The communities are a lot more active than last month so things are looking pretty good.

I also want to focus on getting a graphic novels community up and running but I don’t have that much free time sadly.

      That’s good to hear!

Do you think at some point they should merge to just have more activity and content in one place rather than people having to discuss the same things twice?

Hard to say, I’d prefer having discussion be in one dedicated place but it’s probably a good idea having a backup community, especially at times where Lemmy World goes down.

I see. Yes, having a backup community makes sense, but at the same time, I always feel like having both similar communities creates a lot of other issues.

I never really know if I should post on !fediverse@lemmy.ml or !fediverse@lemmy.world for instance. I usually do it on the .ml one because it seems more active, but I also feed bad for people only on the .world who might miss content

That doesn’t happen because everything is federated, the .world users will also see the posts on .ml, they can upvote/downvote, comment etc. and vice-versa.

I know it’s true in theory, but in practice I have seen some LW users only wanting to browse their local feed, or not wanting to subscribe to .ml communities.

Another issue with having the same content posted twice is that the same discussion could just happen twice, bringing discussion fatigue to the people that just discussed the same topic in another thread.

We shouldn’t centralise Lemmy just because some users treat it as such.

How about the idea of creating an instance specific for the topic, but not opening for registrations? This would mean that the instance wouldn’t be so overloaded and less likely to disappear, no?

This is the approach I took for !main@soccer.forum. I am posting content following from my instance, and I hope that one day it can become the hub for all the soccer-related subs.

!homebrewing@sopuli.xyz is probably the community I’m most active in. It’s a welcoming community for anyone who brews their own alcohol (mainly beer focused I would say but some people have made mead and other wines).

I originally thought you were talking about home brewing custom content for TTRPGs, but alcohol is cool too.
