Bull (pause for emphasis) shit.
It’s got 30 god damned years to draw on. Properties that longtime fans have been begging for for literal decades.
A quarter century of neglected IP. Just pick some. And make them.
Of course we all know the real problem. Those old IP can’t or won’t work as an always online live service. So they won’t make quintillions of dollars a year. They’d make some money if they’re made true to the original vision. But the goal isn’t to make some money. It needs to make all the money. It needs to be a killer app. An Overwatch killer or Fortnite killer. Can’t ever be happy to just make money. Staying in the black isn’t good enough.
I hope every release goes full Concord until they learn their lesson.
That’s a good metric to normalize.
The next Concord.
We gotta buy Astro Bot though

Well if they’re out of original IP maybe they should, you know, CREATE some original IP. Surely there’s bound to be some creatives left in that behemoth of a company.
I know I know, it’s a stock listed company and these just stop innovating and just buy up studios, but they could try it for once.
Let’s set up a steering committee to develop guidelines for an approval process for allocating funds to the creativity enhancement subcommittee.
And don’t forget a subcommittee to review the recommendation to revise the color of the book those guidelines will go in.
I agree that they should create new IPs, but, they did just try that with Concord. So I understand why they would be gun-shy about it.
Their user base isn’t games as a service bullshit. That stuff exists, sure, but Sony’s market share is because of their library of expansive single player experiences.
It’s Uncharted, SpiderMan, God of War, Horizon, The Last of Us. That’s their bread and butter type of product, and that’s what they should focus on. They don’t need to chase microtransaction hell bullshit to be successful.
I loved the uncharted games, I stopped with 3 because the other ones seemed like DLCs and half games and such so I never got around to them.
That said they should do a game based in the 70s with Sully as the lead.
GoW, having never played the originals, are two of the best games I have ever played. I am so jealous of younger me getting to play them for the first time.
Or buy up some classic IPs and do some quality games with them.
Give me a new Carmageddon.
Ah yes. If there’s one thing that the Playstation has been known for over the years, it’s been a very narrow selection of games to draw from.
Days Gone, Infamous?
Not to mention Killzone, Resistance, Jak and Daxter. It is not about quantity, but how you use them. This is proof that these execs are just talking out of their asses and don’t really know what they are talking about.
Another Jak and Daxter could be awesome, but I was so thoroughly disappointed in the Crash Team Racing remaster a few years ago it has basically made me give up hope that nostalgia-based games can be more than cash grabs.
💯 God of War is proof of that. An old franchise relegated to the bin of abandoned Sony IP after being squeezed dry. Then it gets reborn as an entirely different kind of game. They nearly didn’t greenlight it thinking there was no way it would be worthwhile. But they did and the rest is history.
So do that with Resistance or Infamous or Sound Shapes. Easier said than done I know but saying there’s not enough IP is so dumb.
Infamous was a great couple of games, bring it back!
I really liked Days Gone. Great game.
The Legend of Dragoon
SOCOM
Resistance
Killzone
Infamous
Wild Arms
Twisted Metal
Ape Escape
Syphon Filter
Gravity Rush
Dark Cloud
Why don’t we try ANY one of these…?
Jak and Daxter?
Yeah, list is by no means comprehensive. Just one a friend and I came up with discussing this one day.
And they bought Bungie so Myth and Oni are on the table as well.
Gravity Rush 1 and 2 are the only games I actually miss sometimes since I switched to PC
I feel like a SOCOM revival is desperately wanted by the community, but the cost / earnings ratio isn’t good enough. They really mean “Wish we had some IP characters we could make a hero shooter with”
Probably…
wild arms hero shooter would fuck me up
Weird coming from the company that deliberately stop selling to 170 countries for unknown reasons.
APE Escape a joke to you sony?
BRING BACK JET MOTO
in keeping with the all caps sentiment
FUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!
I will go all in on a case of Mt Mist (balling on a budget) and plastic, bulk sack of fritos twists if that happened. My boy and I still load up Jet Moto 2 for a few races a couple times a year.
Company leadership is fucking blind then
*cough* EverQuest Next *cough*
They don’t own Everquest or Planetside. That was Sony Online Entertainment (SOE for short and separate from Sony Playstation) and then it got sold to become Daybreak Game Company. And, Daybreak hasn’t been doing that great last I looked.
Bring back resistance!
Killzone as well
Infamous, the right-hand image here was great. Totally original superhero game from before there were many good ones. I’d love a new one.
Imagine Insomniac making a new Infamous.
I’m sure they’d do great, but Suckerpunch did make Ghost of Tsushima, and that was also great. I’d prefer the creators take another shot. Maybe make it more of an RPG like GoT.
A co-op infamous game for PC I would drop full price on, no questions.
Full disclosure: I never played the sequels (I play co-op almost exclusively now), but I absolutely loved the original game. It would be great to be able to go back to that dystopian world and rediscover my powers (or maybe other variants of them that appeared from disasters) in say … London, DC, or LA (instead of NYC) with a friend.
Capitalist want more capital.
They need NEW IP so that they can be made unburdened by the past experiences of a game industry that respected players even a little.
I mean come on a blood Bourne live service gatcha game would be ridiculed, so need a new IP with its own hype for a live service gatcha game.
