At a rally to commemorate the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, Hungary’s Viktor Orban compared the EU to the Soviet Union and criticized the bloc’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Wednesday likened the European Union to the former Soviet Union and called on Hungarians to “resist” Brussels as they did Moscow in 1956.
Orban, who is closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin than any other European leader, drew the comparison in a speech marking the 1956 Hungarian Uprising against Soviet occupation, which was brutally put down by Russian troops.
Around 3,000 people were killed and 20,000 injured.
For the people equating Hungary to this, there was another rally 80 metres away filling streets and squares, chanting “Russkies go home”.
It was way bigger than this one that Orbán filled up artificially by mandating waterworks workers attend by force.
Orbán’s days are numbered. It will not leave the EU, and it will get back on its feet. All it needed was for the EU to stop financing Orbán.
You just restored some of my faith. Thank you :) 🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺
The Neo of mental gymnastics.
Except Hungary can leave EU any time they wish. So please if you don’t want to stay, just get the fuck out Hungary. You won’t be missed Orban.
He doesn’t really want to do that though. Much more useful to Putin to stay in and keep trying to throw wrenches into the works and such.
Same reason why Russia tried to join NATO back in the 1950s
Wow I didn’t even know that Russia tried to become a member of NATO back in 1954.
But now I’ve read a very cool article describing the history around it:
https://www.military.com/history/russia-once-tried-join-nato-alliance-formed-counter-threats-russia.htmlAnd yes you are right, Hungary is sabotaging EU from within, to benefit Russia.
No but ah… the free money!
You know, I don’t blame Orban as much as I blame the people that made a union they can’t effectively remove people from.
It’s that way on purpose si that countries can still have their sovereignity. Otherwise a couple of countries could bully smaller members and threatening them with expulsion. Also not many countries would be willing to jump through hoops only to be dropped after a minor issue pops up.
Well Hungary certainly doesn’t feel bullied, lol. Kind of just everyone else.
In this case, maybe. In a hundred others, not so much. EU doesn’t come free. It requires effort. It also has its share of corruption and sometimes even favoritism. It is the greatest thing that happened to the continent, but it isn’t a perfect shining beacon, sometimes it just sucks.
Well, I maintain it would work better if it “only” took a 3/4 majority to expel a member.
Orban is a traitor.
He was installed with the help of an organization called the IDU.
Founded and controlled by former Canadian prime minister, the dishonorable Stephen Harper.
The IDU is globally active with the goal of installing ultra conservative governments and creating a world order of “conservative values”.
Hungary is no longer listed as a member of the IDU. There appears to be no press release about that change. Whatever the reason, this puts a spotlight on their motives or competence.
Hungary at this point, they should grow some fucking balls at this time
Okay, so… leave then, if you hate it so much?
Or are you lying and you actually love it, hmm Orby?
I bet that the EU wishes that they’d added clauses to allow members to be booted out.
If they REALLY wanted to they would. Hungary is one of the more eastern countries in Europe. If it leaves it allies with Russia or even joins it potentially. That would throw a serious wrench in the EU’s defense structure.
It kinda wouldn’t, though, considering their location.
Not unless Russia fully takes over Ukraine and has a direct line to Hungary, which I’m low key pretty suspicious was part of Putin’s original plan.
Europe is pretty densely populated and Hungary is bordering a lot of other EU nations. If it allies or joins Russia, then the EU will have what America had with the Cuban missile crisis back in the 60s. Russian arms and forces will be based in Hungary and be able to strike several capitals of nations in the EU within a moments notice. The entire reason Russia needs to take over Ukraine is because they can’t allow NATO forces to get so close to their capital as the Ukrainian borders is only a few hundred km away from Moscow. Same logic applies with Hungary.
Yep. Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague are all within a couple hours of Budapest.
What defense structure does EU have besides sanctions?
The EU has a mutual defense clause.
Similar to NATO, an attack on any EU nation is an attack on all EU nations.
The EU one is actually more strongly worded than the NATO one, if I recall correctly. Basically NATO’s standards are to strongly suggest countrues help in whatever way the country thinks necessary but not require it. EU’s requires countries to provide support including military support.
In writing, but in reality, almost no one in NATO is ready to fight.
Luckily, neither is Russia.
We were talking about the EU. NATO was just an example.
The parts of NATO that aren’t ready to fight are exclusively in the EU.
EU buddied up to Russia for too long and considered US/UK/Poland’s defense buildup bad, now we’re all here.
I just hope the next Australian government will take China seriously.
called on Hungarians to “resist” Brussels as they did Moscow in 1956.
Imagine saying that while commemorating a Russian invasion, and while being best buddies with Russia who are again invanding another country! How he has not been egged or milkshaked yet is beyond me. Those poor bastards died for nothing, didn’t they.
At some point EU must admit that they made a mistake letting Orban in. It is ok to mess up, as long as you mend what is broken.
Hungary joined EU in 2004. Orban was in office 1998-2002 and again starting 2010
Dude, you can leave any time. The door is open, we don’t need you here.
Door’s right open buddy. Nothing stopping you. The UK left, so can you.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
Sounds like it’s time for a Hexit in that case.
