Wow, I guess I don’t really have real life heroes… I’m gonna go generic and just say I can look up to anyone fighting for social justice and who go out of there way to help people. If it’s a historical figure or group starting a revolution or just a person helping out at Food Not Bombs, then you good. Unless you were born rich, we all basically share the same struggles so those working to build class consciousness are my heroes.

So I was gonna make Thanksgiving food for myself this year but a local vegan-friendly place is offering dinner plates, and I thought about it and the cost is gonna be the same or cheaper than me buying everything so I’m gonna go that route. So food is covered, now just need to disassociate for the whole day on Thursday and then it will be over. I hate holidays and I don’t care for any that celebrate western imperialism especially. Families getting together to celebrate the genocide of indigenous Americans while stuffing their faces with animal corpses and secretion is just insane to me. Also my partner’s aunt is an ultra fascist and says the stupidest shit all the time. For the most part, when I’m around they all refrain from bringing up marginalization politics and wait til I’m not around to shit on trans and gay people, but this aunt didn’t get that memo.

E: $33 total for my vegan thanksgiving meal. Jesus Christ… Whelp.

Also all US holidays are just vessels for consumerist bullshit. I say that but I’m gonna keep an eye out on phone deals since ours are going on 6 years old. grillman

I had similar thoughts for the heroes.

And hopefully the dinner plate is good. We did that last year from a local place and it was delicious. But this year i missed the order list since they only post on Facebook which i don’t have. Oh well!

The place I ordered from does descent Tex-Mex style vegan junk food and we go there quite a bit since it’s one of the few places here that offers a vegan menu. I asked the guy and he said his “turkey” is gonna be a homemade seitan so I’m eager to see how it goes. He also got me on the $6 for the vegan cheesecake slice.

I think home cooking would probably be cheaper so probably go that route next year. I just didn’t want to buy a ton of ingredients for stuff only I’ll be eating. I’m calling the price a convenience fee lol.

I love homemade seitan. How was it and the cheesecake slice?

And yeah if you do want to homecook seitan it will definitely be cheaper. If you make it from scratch you wash starch out of flour to get the vital wheat gluten. That process is a bit of a mess but that’s the cheapest way to do it. Otherwise they do sell vital wheat gluten but that’s more expensive for the convenience.

The seitan was probably more meatloaf than turkey but it was alright, not great if I’m honest. The cheesecake was pretty legit though. I wanna ask the owner what the recipe is lol.

Someone on the Vegan Home Cooks discord server sent me a video or recipe for the wash method for seitan but it def seems like a lot of work. I haven’t done the math but if vital wheat gluten is still cheaper than then like hamburger, I might go that route. I’m kind of weird about it but I price check my vegan protein sources against the omni counterparts and if it’s cheaper, it’s justifiable.
