I don’t really know if I have heroes. There are people that have done impressive work but I’m never really one to raise a person above all of us generally. Everybody has periods of being deeply shitty, and most of the best people in history are completely forgotten. If you’re privileged and you do some great work in what sense are you worth admiring more than some nameless parent who struggles through getting their kids out of a famine or a war?

I can’t concentrate on work, a week of storms coming up which means a week of terrified dog and no sleep. Surely this will help my productivity.

Made a library in openscad (unpolished, interface is bad atm) for making boxes for small card games when fed an array of widths of slots. More generally I guess it makes boxes with slots of whatever dimensions you want. I’ll figure out how to publish it soon ™ but if anyone wants the file hit me up.

edit: https://github.com/naevathecat/openscad-cardbox code here if want rough work.

Very much relate to the scared dog and not being able to sleep. The dog we said goodbye to last week (old age) was like that. Hope things go relatively well with storms. As far as concentrating one thing that helped me was starting using a pomodoro timer. Basically try to do distraction free focusing for 25 minutes, then take 5 minute break. After a few intervals you get a longer break. It was hard actually staying focused for 25 minutes with things out of my control (dog), but it has helped me from getting off my phone and such. Still need to get better at consistently doing it though

Also neat about the CAD! Hadn’t heard of openscad before

I have pretty debilitating adhd and fussing with a timer would honestly shred my mind but I appreciate the suggestion. I know that system works for lots of people and I’m glad it helps you. My wife, bless her, has been handling most of the dog sitting-with even though she’s also swamped. I’m just working through the weekend and have done cooking in advance so if I do become productive I can ride the concentration till exhaustion.

The bottom of the box printed and works (I didn’t include enough clearance for the sleeves so it’s a bit snug but eh. Measurement rather than design problem.

I also don’t really have any real life heroes. Though since it’s been on my mind lately: anyone willing to fight for social justice or animal welfare. Protest/civil disobedience/steal neglected animals/etc. They’re the real ones. I hate complacency and people’s tendency to just roll over and accept shit. I’m in that group more than i would care to admit.

Anyway, got invited to a friendsgiving this year. All vegan. Very excited. I’ll be bringing a Jamaican red bean stew which i think has always been a hit

Yeah! A lot of the time we are hosting our non vegan friends and we make them all eat vegan food. But tomorrow some of our vegan friends are hosting and they are much more connected with other local vegans. Should be good to reconnect with some people from last year and then meet some new ones.

Before covid we did have success with hosting vegan meetup groups but haven’t gotten back into the yet

Yeah I have a strict “You can’t bring death to my house” rule but often must compromise my ethical standards to be included in family gathering or some friends. It is vile, and I hate it, but also for all their flaws I love my parents and don’t want to get cut off from their lives.

I don’t have any vegan friends atm (not in meatspace anyway) as the ones I made didn’t stay :< but when you can host an all vegan bash it’s so much more relaxed. No looking away, cautious inspection, just loved ones and good food and good vibes.

I hope you have a great time and reconnect with some awesome people!

I may have posted a similar one already, coming up with these questions is hard, let me know if you have some better ones. I already wrote about Malcom X so I pick a different one. I guess I’m going to pick all the vegans who actually go to their family’s holiday dinners and put up with bullshit and push back. Good job everyone, I bowed out of that a long time ago lol

Wow, I guess I don’t really have real life heroes… I’m gonna go generic and just say I can look up to anyone fighting for social justice and who go out of there way to help people. If it’s a historical figure or group starting a revolution or just a person helping out at Food Not Bombs, then you good. Unless you were born rich, we all basically share the same struggles so those working to build class consciousness are my heroes.

So I was gonna make Thanksgiving food for myself this year but a local vegan-friendly place is offering dinner plates, and I thought about it and the cost is gonna be the same or cheaper than me buying everything so I’m gonna go that route. So food is covered, now just need to disassociate for the whole day on Thursday and then it will be over. I hate holidays and I don’t care for any that celebrate western imperialism especially. Families getting together to celebrate the genocide of indigenous Americans while stuffing their faces with animal corpses and secretion is just insane to me. Also my partner’s aunt is an ultra fascist and says the stupidest shit all the time. For the most part, when I’m around they all refrain from bringing up marginalization politics and wait til I’m not around to shit on trans and gay people, but this aunt didn’t get that memo.

E: $33 total for my vegan thanksgiving meal. Jesus Christ… Whelp.

Also all US holidays are just vessels for consumerist bullshit. I say that but I’m gonna keep an eye out on phone deals since ours are going on 6 years old. grillman

I had similar thoughts for the heroes.

And hopefully the dinner plate is good. We did that last year from a local place and it was delicious. But this year i missed the order list since they only post on Facebook which i don’t have. Oh well!

The place I ordered from does descent Tex-Mex style vegan junk food and we go there quite a bit since it’s one of the few places here that offers a vegan menu. I asked the guy and he said his “turkey” is gonna be a homemade seitan so I’m eager to see how it goes. He also got me on the $6 for the vegan cheesecake slice.

I think home cooking would probably be cheaper so probably go that route next year. I just didn’t want to buy a ton of ingredients for stuff only I’ll be eating. I’m calling the price a convenience fee lol.

I love homemade seitan. How was it and the cheesecake slice?

And yeah if you do want to homecook seitan it will definitely be cheaper. If you make it from scratch you wash starch out of flour to get the vital wheat gluten. That process is a bit of a mess but that’s the cheapest way to do it. Otherwise they do sell vital wheat gluten but that’s more expensive for the convenience.

The seitan was probably more meatloaf than turkey but it was alright, not great if I’m honest. The cheesecake was pretty legit though. I wanna ask the owner what the recipe is lol.

Someone on the Vegan Home Cooks discord server sent me a video or recipe for the wash method for seitan but it def seems like a lot of work. I haven’t done the math but if vital wheat gluten is still cheaper than then like hamburger, I might go that route. I’m kind of weird about it but I price check my vegan protein sources against the omni counterparts and if it’s cheaper, it’s justifiable.
