I started off with a gaming chair pl6800 vertagear that fell apart pretty fast and was abusing my body for a year. (metal jabbing, foam sinking, etc.)
Swapped to a Knoll Generation (renewed for 300 from officelogixshop with issues, they definitely arent remanufactued, seems like they buy them used and clean the main bits to make them look like new) Its pretty amazing as someone who fidgets a lot, being able to stretch with my arms back is insanely comforting because the bucket seat was making me a hunchback. This chair specifically was the best move going from a gaming chair because the back bends, its like the exact opposite of a gaming chair.
It is used and definitely feels off, they sent me a replacement and told me to donate the first one (height adjustment didnt work, new one creaks) But even then its a massive improvement over the gaming chair that was supposedly made for big ppl. (im 240 5’10) The seat while thin is suprisingly comfortable for 8 hours of use daily and I can sit with one leg over the other. I might buy a cushion tho. This was my first “real” chair purchase and its suprisingly decent not being a steelcase amia/leap (havent tried both but its all anyone on reddit talks about)
I’ve been using an Ikea Henriksdal (chair for dining table) for a few years. Recently, my partner needed a new chair and had a choice between a HM Aeron or Sayl. We decided to get both and we’d then each pick the one we prefer after using them for a while. I’m on the Sayl now, but I think I actually prefer the old Henriksdal. It’s so much more spacious and lets you comfortably sit in a bunch of different positions. Both HM chairs confine you to a “proper” sitting position.
I finally decided to get a Haag Capiso chair, and it’s the best thing ever for my back. It’s very different from most office or gaming chairs in the it forces you to sit up straight and is very conducive to moving around and changing positions.
My wife got me a Herman Miller Embody for an anniversary or birthday or something several years ago. It was more than I wanted to spend, but I work from home and it’s incredibly comfortable. It took a little getting used to because I always had cheap office chairs that let me slouch but this makes me sit up straight comfortably.
Aeron here, works great! Perfect for long wfh sessions
I have a Steelcase Amia. It’s my second. My first lasted about 9 years and was mostly fine when I got rid of it. It’s a nice chair even if it seems a bit expensive for being so “ordinary”.
I’ve been using an Ikea Markus for about 15 years, which I’ve been really comfortable with and is not super expensive. It’s not massively adjustable, so if it doesn’t fit your body shape, it might not be for you; but at the same time, it’s fit me and works really well and has enough adjustment that I’ve been able to shift through quite a few different changes in my life over that time. The ‘pleather’ is flaking now, and the padding has completely collapsed, but I’m looking to replace with another one of the same because it’s been good to me, which is probably the highest rating I can give something… it’s worn out from massive amounts of use, and is now due for replacement with exactly the same product.
HM Areon, it’s amazing!
AKRacing Max. It’s about six years old now. They stand behind their warranty.
I’m 6’6" 300# so need a sturdy desk chair.
Thats good to know, vertagear was very sus with their warranty and only replied to my email once. I still want a gaming chair for a sim setup in the future, an “erganomic hybrid” one was a mistake
how much
I bought mine at PAX Prime and it was about 400.
It looks like they may be out of business though.
I got an Ahrend 2020 Verta for a few years now and I’m happy with it. It’s a basic office chair with the usual adjustable bits, but the cushion seat is still as firm as when I bought it. The back is a mesh which is great during the warm summer months and it tilts so I can wobble back and forth (sitting still is an issue for me).
I also have a Swopper chair, which is basically a stool on a big bouncy spring. You can lean in every direction and bounce up and down on it. It’s great for activating your core while you work, but it takes some getting used to. Also someone told me that I made them sea sick with my constant up-down motion during an online meeting :)
This was my first “real” chair purchase and its suprisingly decent not being a steelcase amia/leap (havent tried both but its all anyone on reddit talks about)
I got a leap for $300 from an outlet based in NYC.
I have zero idea why they’re so cheap, but they’re real and brand new, so big “fell off a truck” vibes. Especially since everything is constantly “on sale”.
But I bought one in 2017 from them, and another in 2022. Never had issues, and the website is still up. It’s just the “sale” they’re having has seemingly been running for 8 years now.
