Any paid app is a joke to me. Been very very happy with Voyager for a long while now.
Do you mean any paid app for Lemmy or any mobile app?
Is this an ethical take, or just a general one?
I’m using boost and am happy to have donated - it’s a good app and the dev is decent.
I despise the iOS UI of Voyager. It literally looks like an iOS 5 app. I don’t want that crap on my android device in 2025!
Sync has the most polished, most “Android” UI. The developer disappeared for years at a time before, so he’ll be back again.
I’ve switched over to Voyager from Sync and I agree about the UI. It’s fine but Sync is just prettier and also smoother to use. I miss being able to swipe from the left to bring up the sidebar for communities.
I’ve tried loads of clients and none come close to Sync in terms of UI and performance, but unfortunately it’s buggy (main gripe for me is not being able to see comments on communities from my own instance that I’m not subscribed to), and the app developer seems to have abandoned it.
I’ve looked online to see whether other people had this bug and couldn’t find anything.
I didn’t realise it was as specific as you say, I might look at using a different account for browsing feddit.uk which feels kind of ironic

This one seems to be about any community on a local instance.
https://github.com/laurencedawson/sync-for-lemmy/issues/542
This one is the same issue I mentioned where it only applies to communities that you’re not subscribed to. Funnily enough I commented on that issue and the bug reporter said they had the same issue, but the bug reporter from the first link said it’s slightly different for them.
Either way, there’s some funkiness with comments not showing up from a local instance.
Can you explain the bug you mention a bit more? I use sync and when I go to this thread in c/technology (which I’m not subscribed to), it lists 10 comments and all of them appear for me.
That’s on lemmy.world, where you’re on lemmy.zip, so it’s a community that’s not on your own instance. That said, I don’t know if it’s something that affects everyone but I’ve seen others mention it on the sync community and someone had reported a bug report on GitHub for it.
Interesting. Seems like I can see everything from my local (like here for example: https://lemmy.zip/post/31533252 ) but I’ll keep an eye out in the future
Voyager has different settings you can customize, but it’s super similar to RedditIsFun design wise and that was always my favorite client for Reddit. I like simple and compact.
I despise the Android UI of Immich. It literally looks like an Android 4.4 app. I don’t want that crap on my iPhone in 2025!

People were like “I’m spending all of my money on Sync for Lemmy” when it first released. And it steals your data. Never understood why this one would be preferred over the dozens of actually FOSS or free apps for lemmy
Can you say more about sync stealing your data? I must have missed the memo.
Stealing may be the wrong word, but their privacy policy is… Not great… Policy. I much prefer apps that do not get my purchase history and use other forms of trackers, thanks very much!
Which FOSS Lemmy app do you recommend?
Eternity is great too!
Connect is fine.
For android, thunder. Best one imo, great customization but idk if its my phone but scrolling is stuttery.
For iOS, i’d go with Voyager.
Voyager is fantastic. Very much the spiritual successor to Apollo.
I’m on android and never used/had ios but I’m loving voyager and have been using it for months.
Edit: Oh, after reading the comments I tried the ios mode and it really does look different. I like the android one more.
I recommend thunder as well! It has all expected features and is customizable as hell in case you need something specific.
It just got a big update to 0.6.0 that the dev has been working on for a while
It’s not just you, scrolling is a little stuttery for me too. And I don’t like the “mark as read” animation, it takes forever to clear all the cards, I wish it was instant
They are both available for both platforms. Do they perform differently on each platform?
Voyager just feels iosy in design, and Thunder feels androidy
For me personally, i prefer material you theme that thunder offers. Voyager has ios ui, since it follows Apollo ui.
I never noticed. Even though I’m on Android I definitely prefer the Apple setting on voyager.
Voyager does have an experimental Android UI that you can enable in the settings. But even though that does make it more Android-y, it is still very iOS-y.
Huh. Never knew that since i use thunder exclusively afer moving to android. Used Voyager on iOS before and it was great. Maybe ill check the experimental UI later, thanks for the heads up.
Voyager
!voyagerapp@lemmy.world is a popular recommendation.
Voyager da 🐐 no 🧢
Summit
That is not open source
Thunder! ⚡
Thunder! Voyager seems to have more features, but the one killer feature that it lacks is gesture navigation, so Thunder it is.
Damn, I was all ready to switch but I gotta have an option for columns. I downloaded it to check it out, and that’s the first thing I look for.
EDIT: I found a setting. It seems it’s under “Tablet Mode” though it only allows for 2 columns. I generally prefer 2 columns for my phone in portrait mode. If I was actually using a tablet, I’d go for 4+ columns.
I have a version of Thunder compiled for desktop, and it’s surprisingly easy to change the number of columns for Tablet Mode. There’s probably other places too, but the line I changed (from ‘2’ to ‘4’) is here

I realise you might not want to compile your own version, but it suggests that the developers could add ‘number of columns for tablet mode’ option relatively easily.
Neat !
I liked Thunder when I used it. But I have been on Connect a lot more which is not FOSS, but I liked it better than the rest of the apps I tried when I first switched to Lemmy. Actually testing Thunder again right now, might be my go-to from now on
Or they like to hang the carrot that they will “someday” go open source.
Arctic is good and getting better. But dude is too ashamed of his code to allow our help.
I mean, fair though. I would never want anyone looking at my code either.
The comments on my code would be all apologies, “my code is crap, sorry” “this shouldn’t work but it does. Forgive me” “Beware all that enter, I apologize for the spaghetti everywhere”
free open source vs paid for proprietary
Interstellar has an awesome dev, very responsive and helpful!
Edit: Fixed, lol
Interstellar I guess?
I think you might be responding to the wrong post?Disregard my previous statement, I got the dumb. Thanks!
I think they are trying to correct you. Unless there actually is a Lemmy client called Intergalactic
D’oh! Fucking autocorrect… Thanks!
