Could be soap, food, sculptures, art, clothes, toys, and all kinds of wonderful stuff!

Interesting idea, but it would need to be heavily moderated against scams and such that have pervaded other online “handmade” shops.
Lemmy doesn’t worry me too much. If we start small, we don’t have to stress about it too much. I’ll focus more on issues when the community gets bigger.
I’ve modded trading communities before, too, so I have a bit of experience on what to look out for!

Yeah, if no one from your instance is subscribed to a community, it won’t show up unless you search for it, which kicks off federation.
