It turns out it was the refrigerator all along…

You know, that makes sense, I anthropomorphized the fridge and had it literally shrinking clothing, maybe to keep the food, the glutton that the fridge is.

I understood and liked the joke. It would flop in a standup set but get some chuckles if you dropped it in context at a social gathering. There is nothing wrong with the wording either despite what others are saying

“I thought the dryer was the machine responsible for my shrinking clothes”

Might be a clearer setup. Solid joke overall though

Using the wrong setting on a clothes dryer can cause certain fabrics to shrink. People that are gaining weight would often blame the dryer for shrinking their clothes rather than take some personal responsibility. Hence the joke is they thought it was the dryer shrinking their clothes but it was them overeating aka the refrigerator’s fault.

I should say, I understand the joke.

But the language of saying “it was the refrigerator that made my clothes shrink” just isn’t very funny to me.

Maybe it’s because a refrigerator can’t actually do anything other than chill stuff, where as a dryer can shrink and dry clothes.

I could see Norm making a joke similar to this, but Id imagine he’d add onto the end by saying something after a pause, when the audience is visibly confused, like “Because I was getting fat. I was eating too much.”

Agree. It’s too many “hops” for most people and the confusion:laughter ratio gets thrown off. It’s not delighted surprise, it’s… “wut?? Oh.”
