This movie was pretty good. Actually felt like a breath of fresh air compared to Marvelslop and Snyderslop.

Superman actually felt like Superman. Lex felt like a billionaire. The Justice Gang was great. I loved that Hawkgirl actually killed the Netanyahu.

It just needed more Clark time like the old movies. Christopher Reeves is still the best Clark Kent by a mile.

This movie was great. Gunn in peak liberal USian brain denied that it was an allegory for the Palestinian genocide and struggle, but it honestly fits it perfectly. Hawkgirl actually killing discount Netanyahu was not something I expected lol, but I’m glad it happened. Also I don’t know much about Guy Gardner, only that he’s kinda of hated, right? But honestly I liked him, dude was just funny lol.

I think this feels like something fresh because Snyder movies have a really weird aesthetic that I think tainted DC’s heroes. Probably has to do with the whole discussion about his aesthetic being kind of fascistic, tho I haven’t really read on it yet. I only watched 300 in recent years, but I didn’t get what everyone else saw in that movie, in fact it just weirded me out mostly, and it’s probably because of that aesthetic.

Idk about the fascist aesthetic but Synders version of superheros was just too gruesome.

He made his characters for ripping off the Batman vs Superman comic which required them to be dark but it doesn’t work out for a justice league movie.

Superman was kinda insane and quite literally just caused immense destruction without any sort of care.

      Batman literally killed people.

      Gal Gadot.

That too definitely, I was talking more in very broad terms about the movies. These versions of the characters can work, but it shouldn’t have been them when trying to create a cinematic universe.

IDF Gadot can fuck off tho

I think this feels like something fresh because Snyder movies have a really weird aesthetic that I think tainted DC’s heroes.

That’s probably because the Snyder, the writer’s room, or both seems to have only read Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke, and Watchmen. Especially the first of the three, and you can see it bubbling from the seems in the Nolan batman movies too.

A little bit about Dark Knight Returns since a lot of DC stuff was influenced by it throughout the 2000s and mostly through the 10s. Written by Frank Millar, it is pretty much the “definitive” batman story that pushed all future Batman stories into having a dark/brooding tone. It’s also the center piece of what the popular image of batman is, which was further popularized by the Nolan Batman trilogy, and oh boy this story did not age well at all. Especially since Frank Millar went on to write Holy Terror, if you don’t know about that book, be thankful for the rock you’re living under. It’s a lot worse then you’re thinking.

my only experience with the Dark Knight story is from the Nolan movies and the animated adaptations.

Okay, the animated one is a adaptation of the comic book series, Nolan’s batman movies are just heavily influenced by the comics. In that it always shows Batman to be correct in what he does and such.

Dark Knight Returns, and most Batman stories that Frank Millar wrote is I feel pretty much the main reason why people say “Batman is a fascist”. And if someone’s only exposure to the caped crusader was through Frank Millar written stories (and ones where the writer was influenced by Frank’s work) I feel sorry for them, and I do understand why they would think Batman is a fascist. Because that’s just how Frank Millar writes Batman for some reason.

I think it wasn’t an allegory for Palestine because the whole Boravia plot was vapid liberal fantasy with a hamfistedly fake Putin ebil dictator. It’s basically a fusion of the liberal conception of the Russia-Ukraine war combined with the Palestinian genocide, except it’s Russia that is the bad guy in Palestine — because of course it is a superhero movie for US propaganda purposes.

I love how techno billionaire Lex was. Very Musk-esque. Very entertaining.

Also, I never knew Mr Terriffic as a character before this movie, but he was easily my favorite character.

Tangentially related but I wish they did a superman movie where it was him stopping world-ending phenomena and giant monsters in rapid succession.

They gave superman every power in the book. Why yes, I want to see an 8 minute sequence of him turning back a mountain-sized tsunami.

Have lex luthor raise a Kaiju from the deep, clark’s in some kryptonite stockade to build tension, and then at the last second he flies like a missile into the thing’s chest and starts fighting it by pushing back it’s punches and other insane wide-shot choreography that feels really massive psyical and weighty.

Unless they do that all the time and I should actually watch Superman movies then I should sit my ass down and listen.

There’s some greentext story about a potential Superman movie where the CIA keeps trying to give Clark Kent the CIA award for journalism, but fail and can’t figure out why.

      I’d watch that.

This one has a pretty great bit with a kaiju where it’s clear that Supes can just kill it but he’s trying to prevent civilian casualties and capture it alive for study so he’s holding back. IMO that’s where the best Superman drama is created, we already know that he’s going to win in the end it’s all about how he does it.

James Gunn showed that he knows Superman by showing how much Superman fucking loves spin attacks. If the next movie has him eating random rocks and weapons it’ll be the truest adaptation of the character we’ve seen yet.
