Holy shit what a waste of a Saturday night. I can’t believe I gave that yayhoo money.

Jokes on me though. I watched it.

This was a g*mer movie. Same as the minecrap movie. Pretending this is a passion project is a disservice to those that are actual passion projects.

Nah, there’s a big difference between them. Minecraft was a $150 million budget movie. It had a director and like 7 screen writers. It involved multiple A list level movie stars and top production companies like Legendary Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, and was based on the biggest video game in the world.

Iron Lung was self-financed by one YouTube star. It was directed by the same guy in their theatrical directorial debut, written by him, and stars him. It’s 99% of the movie is him. There’s like 2 or 3 other people shown on screen, most of them don’t even have Wikipedia articles including the co-star, a couple are voice actors or YouTuber. It’s got a budget of only $3 million and it’s based on a small indie game most people have never heard of (including me lol).

One was made because the game is popular and they wanted to make a billion dollars, and they basically succeeded. The other one was made because a successful YouTuber played a game, enjoyed it, and decided to make a movie. It’s not the greatest movie, but I would consider it a passion project.

I know who he is but not why he is popular. He is another streamer guy who doesn’t really do anything other than talk on a camera and get donations? I’ve just never understood the whole streamer guy/gal thing. It does not appeal to me in the slightest.

I’m decidedly not the target market.

Main character can’t act. I wasn’t expecting cinematic excellence, but my goodness. Like most newer movies everything is so dark you can’t make out things that happen on screen. There’s a good bit of dark, mostly blurry stuff happening to or around the main character at multiple points in the flick. Writing/directing/starring was a mistake too, IMO.

I’m not a g*mer, so didn’t realize the movie was based off a game until it was mentioned on screen. There has to be lore I do not know about, having not played whatever it is based on. I’m of mixed opinions here. Movies are made to be enjoyed by fans of something so it’s ok to not spell it all neatly for those of us not steeped in the lore, but this was hard to get context from. WHY is the main character in a fucking homebrew apocalypse sub, like to what end is he aiming for, as well as the circumstances surrounding how he ended up in a submarine meant to sail the seas of blood. I have no problem w suspension of disbelief, but this was hard to do that for.

The last 45+ min were spent looking at my watch and trying to figure out how long I had left.

there’s actually more lore in the movie than there is in the game

definitely did not need to be two hours. There’s probably an excellent 60 or even 40 min film in there, if you let a good enough editor at it

Wait they did a lore dump and didn’t give you the basics that you can find in a computer terminal at the very start of the game?

        If your curious:

        spoiler

The universe is dying, whole solar systems just disappear. The last of humanity is like a few hundred people on a space station. Protag is a a political prisoner imprisoned after a riot who’s meant to help do research to serve the sentence but there’s an implication they’re purposefully killing people on suicide missions to thin out the population iirc.

They send you to the blood planet because they detected life in the ocean and they’re trying to find any remaining life they can to figure out what the fuck is going on.

There’s like interesting story telling they could do with that context too did they really do a 2 hour movie in just the sub? Whaddahell?

it’s an odd choice for a movie adaptation imo, a huge part of the game’s appeal is its smart use of “laggy” controls to allow tension building. any non-interactive adaptation is gonna lose that magic
