If you remember using teamspeak or ventrillo… Their is a FOSS alternative called mumble that works similarly. Its essentially the closest to what you’re asking that has both VOIP and other features. Some communities especially mmorpg clans and gaming clans still use it. Idk how popular it is in general though. Discord is supported by huge donations which is why they’ve been able to dominate, but teamspeak/mumble still exist and essentially are the same thing but less modern.

IRC and Matrix are both IM systems but are alternatives to discord if that’s all the functionality you seek. Matrix is also in the fediverse.

I also am hoping for more Gamedev groups. r/gamedev is shut down so my only hope is a community growing fast on here. the discords are… ok but not what I’m looking for. And I’m off reddit now so nothing on there will work for me.

I actually just happened to come across Raddle while looking for forum style websites today. Decided I was in the wrong space when a post about lemmygrad (them acting as if all of lemmy is as based as lemmygrad) was met with an upvoted comment left up for hours of some anarkiddie saying “I want to physically hurt them.” Oh no but WE’RE somehow the deranged ones, nah ok sure yep y’all go uplift your most aesthetically violent and then complain about TANKIE BACKSTABBERS.

No you’re not inherently hypocritical because while you may be the beneficiary of capitalist exploitation and landleeches, but that doesn’t mean you must do the same. Not unlike what Engles did, there are pro worker movements that you could put your efforts toward especially if you’re in a more comfortable and need to work relatively less… After all it’s hard to teach theory and spread awareness/organize labour power, if you’re always having to work for the meat on your plate. We’re not a movement of meritocracy/individuality, we need as many people to understand and teach the horrors of capitalism as well the way forward.

That all said ensure you get your education and don’t waste this opportunity to ensure your own financial security (ideally with no reliance on labour value extraction). To become a capitalist is “bad” but there always will be capitalists so to be a capitalists that is pushing for revolution will be better than anti-revolutionaries exclusive holding the power. Additionally, many great members of the movement have benefited from or been themselves capitalists. Their self-awareness and efforts they made to write these wrongs is what set them apart.

I grew up late to the early internet days as I am just about as old as google itself. However, even in my time I remember light saber mouse cursors, neo colored backgrounds, the stupid but adorable fairy animations all over myspace, and websites auto playing Queen songs. There was character that we put it as a community.

While I may not be the biggest fan of the flat design of the lemmy website and how clinical it all seems, the FOSS nature leads to so much customization with apps and so forth while the content y’all produce is absolutely magical. If I see an ad I know it’s cause one of you have something unique to actually show off and it’s not just bots pushing me to open my wallet. Thank you, you lovely bunch of adorable dufuses.

I think its just easier for many to go from 5e backwards due to how 5e has more “freedom” while earlier editions rely on additional rules and mechanics to determine a lot of the bloat. I started with 2e because my group was very stubborn and took years to adapt. congrats on joining the modern world though!!!

Mixed bag but no cut ties is the best outcome from my perspective. Its reddit community used to be a more accepting leftist space with a lot of queer humor. But over time the Libs slowly got worse. I remember when I first joined it felt like it was run by actual leftists (mostly baby leftists and anarkiddies but still) The first “kick tankies of of r/196” wasn’t as well received as this one…

So when Ukraine war broke out they got… So much worse. I have no hope for the instance tbh and am glad they banned me, if only for 3 days as apparently I’m only a borderline tankie lmao. We have our own 196 which is much better tbh.___

Can testify to just how good the story is. I’ve only completed a single store line but the game is rather short (about 30-40 hours for a slow first play through I think?) encouraging you to go through repeatedly to find all the different story progression possibilities. Like OP said choice REALLY matters in this game and can have consequences sometimes altering the entire path of the story unlike most games where the storylines usually “converge” back to a singular plotline.

The combat is comparable to Pillars of Eternity and there is an interesting magic rune system, but it’s story is where it shines, each faction and storyline is fully fleshed out with interesting conversations, companions, and lore. Additionally unique questlines, companions, locations, and more are accessible or change according on your choices. It’s worth at least 1 playthrough but there is enough for about 5 or so playthroughs through the various branches.

With the mass of redditors leaving Reddit it’s no surprise that the federation map has so much red around us. I only hope lemmy.world keeps us federated because they feel very much like the link between worlds for me. The users are a mixed bag and full of “RED FASH” libs, but having a community that is large and can decide for themselves by visiting and observing us/our users is much better than this de-fed stuff. Much more in the spirit of FOSS and etc also.

Nothing really changes since we could just make a non lemmygrad account, just prevents the lemmygrad (and sometimes lemmy) from being seen by “normies” so people can keep the projection that we’re anti-LGBT facist nazi sympathizers going longer.

We also can still see their content as we wish through our lemmygrad account and even comment on the “lemmygrad” version of it (not sure if this would be a shared version with lemmy and co but I think they’d also see our comments?), they’re just “muting” our community really. The way the fediverse works will we can see their content as long as Lemmygrad doesn’t block them back, which I doubt us or Lemmy.ml will be blocking any of these places. for instance we have our own version of 196 thanks to the large “anti-tankie” stance they’re taking but haven’t blocked the lib version at all.

Our versions of these anti-federation communities may seem smaller but keep in mind our users are more keen on FOSS and supporting this project instead of just making Reddit 2.0 and as such I think the community (here or on lemmy.ml) will show more “heart” than the more close minded instances. After all these groups have a lot of… reddit type behavior in their posts and it’s actually a huge turn off for me and others.

I mean they talk about us the way RFA talks about Cuba or DPRK. We’re the DPRK of the Fediverse at this point and I’m chill with that. If anything they’re filtering MY experience so I don’t have to handle too much libshit

I’m actually upset I got banned for being a “borderline” tankie. Dang it I wanted the full tankie ban what is this shit.

There is nothing about the core ideology of Marxism Leninism that is opposed to queer rights. Actually there are a lot of queer people in the community at large who are communist and findable on YouTube or Lemmy. I’m one of them.

I’m not here to teach everything and I trust you know enough to be able to look up more as you wish. If you want an example of an ML nation that is pro queer look up the Cuba Family Code changes made recently. They’re among the most progressive in the world and help to guarente rights for trans people, lgbt, and more. Additionally China has a large trans healthcare clinic first of its kind recently opened in Beijing and a well known trans TV host. Vietnam also has a vibrant lgbt community and even in North Korea homosexuality and cross dressing to my research are not criminalized despite lacking public interest/support.

The days of old are over and new communist nations can and are doing better to ditch reactionary tendencies especially around queer rights.

I get you’re trying to make a big point here about China, but within the last 3 years they opened a multidisciplinary trans healthcare clinic in Beijing and additionally a well known TV host in the country is transgender and this is easily findable even within US new sources. It may still not be culturally fully accepted but I don’t see how the government is doing anything against us when they’re literally opening trans healthcare clinics. Hell there were trans expat teachers who used to move to China for teaching before the changes in education laws for expat teacher licensing.

Just the very idea they make any profit despite utilizing almost universal unpaid labour is ridiculous. The only issue I see with moving forward is that the user base leaving that website and flocking to say… here; except for those willing to understand workers rights, anti-capitalism, or FOSS, the majority of new users seem to only seek to replicate Reddit, and honestly reddit as a whole has needed to rot off for a while thanks to not only the bots but the general and growing toxicity of the websites’ userbase and management seeking to continue that dopamine rush driven content stream and drama theatre.
I love this website for what it is even though I just arrived, I don’t want it to become reddit or replicate reddit, these people can’t seem to break their redditor addictions and see there can be something NEW here unrestricted by capitalistic profit desires. Hope they come around tbh.
