The entire headline is written in passive voice. The headline should be “89 year old driver runs over Germany’s worlds track cyclists”. But then that starts raising questions about cars and the safety of allowing people with impaired senses and reflexes operate a potentially deadly machinery.
I kind of agree but at the same time the car is the reason it’s a problem.
Just like guns are the problem when people get shot. You shouldn’t remove all agency from the driver but also … its a deadly machine that poorly-trained people are operating every day, and other people are gonna get caught in the crossfire.
Just days after 19 years old italian cyclist Sara Piffer was killed by a 70 year old driver.
The wording bugs me every time. As if the cars were acting and doing things by themselves and are not passive objects handled by people.

That’s why bikelaw and cyclists prefer the word collision. This isn’t just an oopsie.
Because accident implies there’s nobody to blame.

Replacing does make it sound weird though: “Germany’s world bank robbers suffer multiple gun wounds after being hit by bullet”
