…and kids too.
Like less normal than us.
CW:
Uhh… yeah, people have gotten real fucking weird about dogs over the last twenty years. Like, i mostly stay out of it, but when was the last time you saw a dog that could heel. Like the dog’s off leash running around having fun and someone yell’ ps “skipper! Heel!” And the dog walks over and lays down beside them waiting for a command, or walks calmly next to them. You know, heel. It’s the most basic, probably the most important command. I can’t think of any time i’ve met a dog that could heel up since I was a kid. People have gotten real fucking weird about dogs. It’s freaky. I try to stay out of it.
Pets are a responsibility. If I had a fucking feral child everyone would call me a negligent parent. Same goes for pets. They might be inclined to cohabitation due to domestication but that doesn’t mean you can take a hands-free approach.
Cats are pretty chill ngl
Cats are definitely more independent but there’s still ways of teaching them a few basic rules like “don’t bite my hand while playing” or “it’s time for a meal.” Consistency is key.
A simple thing with cats you can do is the slow blink. It shows trust. If they lock eyes with you while on your lap look away, slowly scan the room (for danger), lock eyes with them again and slowly close them. It says “I checked it out and it’s safe to let my guard down.” They’ll follow your cue.
Huge numbers of dogs also have weird behavioral triggers with bikes, skateboards, and scooters. Will lunge at them as they go by. I was walking one of my friends’ dogs because they were out of town and the fucker tried to straight up yeet himself into oncoming traffic because he saw a bicycle on the other side of the road. Had dogs try to lunge at me as I biked by many times. Why do these people even take them out on bike paths???
weird behavioral triggers
Right? They’re territorial predators, and people just don’t train or socialize them. Those leashes that are on a spring and the dog can just spool out line, that’s not keeping your dog under control. idk, people are fucking goofy. And then they get goofy when you point out that their 40, 50lb predatory land mammal isn’t safe to take outside. Not safe for the dog, not safe for bystanders, because they made no effort at all to train the animal. Like fuck off, dude, you’re the one who couldn’t be bothered to take your dog to puppy socialization and teach it to stay, you are the villain here.
My roommate’s dog only hated longboards. Regular skateboards were fine. She was anti poser
I hate dogs because of shit like this. Definitely had cases where I’d be out walking and some dog would start charging across traffic at me.
It’s freaky. I try to stay out of it
people have gotten real fucking weird about dogs over the last twenty years
Yes, it’s almost like people have become less financially stable and more socially isolated they’ve become attached to easily accessible sources of relationships and affection. It’s no excuse to not train your dog, but people’s relationship with their pets has fundamentally changed.
Exactly, 100% agree.
I know people that trained their dogs well and they’ll do exactly that.
Though one of them has a husky so they’ll whine a lot first but then eventually heel.
holh shit the soyfacers over here got a shout out
🎉 HEXBEAR MENTIONED 🎉
Holy fucking shit :0
The weird takes on pets in this thread are why communism will never gain steam.
Yes I’m sure a handful of weirdos on a niche internet forum are the sole roadblock preventing global communism from becoming a reality.
Every revolution ever has been started by a handful of weirdos in a niche group. We need better niche groups or weirdos if we ever want to get anything off the ground.
Are dogs bourgeois?
No. Cats are, and if you argue with me I’ll even go further and say cats are feudalists
He made up for his bourgeois excess by killing the Romanovs
That is a picture of Lenin seizing a bourgeois cat and taking it to trial for supporting White Army terrorists!
Cats are sovcits.
Why do you ask us this question
it is always crucial to remember that even the best subreddits are still entirely full of redditors
There’s some very good points in that thread about people over othe valuing the lives of dogs over other people and being misanthropic, and replacement parenting with regards to “fur babies”, but as usual on Reddit, it’s buried under a ton of nonsense.
I’ve been rescuing stray dogs and cats my whole life without provocation, caring for animals is just a thing we humans with our constantly active empathetic and social instincts do. I’m also not saying those of you who don’t “get” it aren’t empathetic or social but you must be lying if you can’t at least intellectually understand why people would enjoy it.
Edited to say that I do agree that there are def some hateful freaks out there who only like animals because animals don’t talk back, but when my cat puts his little warm body in the crook of my arm I’m not thinking “wow you are so much more worthy of my love than a human being”
forget about dogs. when will we let comrade raccoon into our homes, and into our hearts?
I actually understand where OP is coming from
Donald Glover’s Atlanta covered this in a 3 minute scene https://youtu.be/EMSrjJngnkY?si=DsbEy0i089k6lGby
I think this might be a thing where because we’re all chronically online, we’re assuming this is a weird online take but it might actually just be a normal take but we’re not normal enough to realize it’s normal
Nah it’s weird. And I think you’re misunderstanding that clip the takeaway isn’t that reactionaries like dogs and normal people don’t Darius is sort of definitionally not normal, and he likes dogs anyways.
I definitely think OP has a point where reactionaries who don’t have solidarity or feelings of connection and belonging with fellow humans are more likely to be weird dog people tho
I really don’t see it. The opposite in fact. With only one exception, every weird dog/cat/bird/lizard person I know is more social, more accepting, and more empathetic than the average person I meet.
IME, dog people are just liberals. Reactionaries tend to hate animals period and don’t have what it takes to take care of a dog without physically abusing them and progressives tend to like animals, including animals who aren’t their pets. The type of person who’s really into their dog but doesn’t want to install a bird feeder in their backyard is just an average liberal in terms of politics.
Wasn’t there some prank TV show from the 00’s that literally genuinely did the dog-target schtick at a gun range. I remember that being an Obama era joke.
That scene is great lol
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
but also ngl they’re kind of making some decent points unironically
Yeah, as most struggle sessions do make some good points.
But then you have some guy proudly talking about his dad beating a dog with a stick and saying it was based cuz he’s a POC. Like yes white people “luv my heckin doggo more than people” culture is cringe, counter jerking to it to the point you celebrate animal abuse is even more cringe.
his dad beating a dog with a stick and saying it was based cuz he’s a POC
yeah thats fucked up, ngl id only read like the first three comments or so when i commented
Wasn’t that cause the dog was attacking him lol
Like in a fight a dog would probably kill a human so much easier than the other way around
Yeah, dogs, even relatively small dogs, can cause very severe damage very quickly. There’s a reason that for a long, long time a dog that bit someone was immediately put down (rabies was also a factor). Even relatively small dogs can cause severe injury resulting in permanent disability. I really wonder if people realize how bad a dog attack can be and how quickly it can happen. Aggressive, reactive dogs aren’t an embarrassment, they’re a loaded gun and the owner has the safety off and the finger on the trigger. Muzzles should be the norm for any dog that’s even remotely reactive when they’re in public.
A big factor is; Most people can’t meaningfully fight a dog. Many, probably most, dogs are big wimps who have no interest in a real fight. A dog that does decide it wants to fight, though, it’s a small target, their heads are narrow, their organs are all under their body protected by ribs, they’re very nimble. If you land a punch on a dog it probably won’t do much, but if a dog bites, latches, and tears it’s going to cause you immediate severe injury.
Again, most dogs aren’t going to fight anyone in any circumstances. Even if they bite someone when they’re cornered and scared they’re just going to nip and retreat. But a dog that does commit to an attack is extremely dangerous, and the danger increased the smaller, younger, or older the victim is.
Whenever I’ve said shit about hitting dogs around white people (because sometimes that happens) they act like you just disemboweled a (white) baby in front of them. Some of them need to get hit sometimes! An un-leashed German Shepherd started aggressively stepping to our dog on a walk the other day and my Mexican ass dad, having no white person pupper respect immediately took a stick and started fucking it up!
Nah this person is just fucked up.
As someone who has worked doing home deliveries, I do kinda hate other people’s dogs
People are very weird with pets
In both directions
Okay how is this;
People are increasingly alienated from their fellow humans, and as a defense against that alienation they are ascribing more and more importance to their companion animals. In some cases this reaches a point where it is harmful both to the person and the animal, as the person is unable to effectively care for the animal because they no longer recognize it as having the limitations and needs of an animal.
I think that’s pretty much what I was saying but much better worded. People with poorly trained dogs because they over anthropromorphise them are a product of alienation and atomization.
Dogs are reactionary though. Loyalty is not a virtue.
Blind Loyalty as a concept maybe not, but the ability to show loyalty and commitment is absolutely a virtue.
I was joking, but as with most things it depends on the context. Blind loyalty is bad, yes, but so is an informed loyalty to a dishonorable cause or person(s).
i am loyal to our big beautiful red flag
