TL;DR:
- Completely new distro, not just another fork of Ubuntu or Arch
- Right now not usable at all. Mostly thought for testing the concepts and underlying technologies, like the new package manager.
- Currently offers stock Gnome, but Cosmic will follow
- New package manager called
moss
- Image based distro, very similar to Fedora Atomic with OSTree, with rollbacks and stuff
WHY? GOD WHY??? Why another new package manager???
I think that’s the beauty of Linux, no?
Don’t like something? Search for something that suits you.
Can’t find something that suits you but know how to code? Create something that suits you.
I’m waiting for the-crotchOS, a distro that caters to me specifically and no one else
Nobody has to use your code, it’s just that you have the option to do so.
Yeah, it is, but users avoid systems with high fragmentation. I’m not against create 1 billion package managers, but IMO distros should ship a default one (I’m in favor of something cross-distro, like Flatpaks) and if I want something different I just install it
What’s the point?
That website does not tell the basics, just insider talk.
I just made a TL;DR for you :)
I think the point is to make people aware of their progress and that they are open for testing.
From the website: Goals
Take control of your computer Get the most from your hardware Enjoy a reliable experience Improve your experience behind the scenes Develop and contribute quickly and efficiently Be part of a thriving community Have fun while interacting with other users and contributors
These are so incredibly unspecific
The website has an about page in the sidebar.
It would be cool if the new package manager could take advantage of existing package repositories
This. Without any package and package maintainer, it will be pretty much useless
And that’s how all package managers start. If it gets enough attention and enough people find the new capabilities of the package manager and distro interesting, it will get packages made for it.
Keeping an eye on this distro for over a year, I really hope this will be something innovative. But it is still very early, so lets see what the years to come will bring.
