Names blurred to protect the innocent / crazy. Not trying to call anyone out, just thought the response was hilarious and highly disproportionate. Like, they distinguished that comment (green border/background).
For reference, the comment I presume that was downvoted that apparently triggered that response was to the tune of “BoTH SiDEz!!!” with some hyper generalizing / stereotyping on the side.
Talk about reddit brained. Why do downvotes matter to so many people? There is no karma count except for individual comments. You don’t know what someone downvotes for so why get worked up over it?
If you don’t like downvotes (like me!) join an instance with disabled downvotes. Simple solution. I don’t know why OOP hasn’t disabled downvotes on their instance.

What do you mean?
It still shows upvotes.
Yes obvs everyone else who has downvotes implemented can see them. But if you personally don’t like how downvotes are being used, then your experience will be devoid of them. Which is a great personalisation feature.
deleted by creator
Wait really, it shows downvotes as upvotes? I believe that is wrong. It just doesn’t show downvotes.
I’ve seen heavily downvoted comments show up with like +3 scores or something, while on lemmy.world they show up as -54. And if you check on web it will show 57 down 3 up.

If someone indicates they dislike a narcissist’s content it shatters their ego.
Just because you call someone something doesn’t mean that it is true.

The instance can also disable downvotes. It won’t block a remote instance from downvoting, but those downvotes won’t be federated and will only be seen for users of the instance where the downvote happened.
Now that is an interesting idea. A timeline that ranks only by local votes
Yeah, with that, you’d be able to control who can vote on the posts your users see. Very useful for a totalitarian admin.
I had similar experiences in the past, I get you.

If you want it to be for vegans only then you should defederate tbh
Because it is a form of downplaying the abuse farm animal face everyday.
Maybe they downvote without commenting because they get banned when they comment?
Idk the instance, but it’s pretty funny calling down voting undemocratic when it’s the only means of voting on comments and you effective rigged that election lol
Its their instance, their rules. Instances should always place their users before guests.
I agree. I didn’t say they shouldn’t be allowed to enforce their own rules. I just said their justification of those rules was stupid. They’re allowed to be stupid, it’s their instance
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I am of the firm belief after much deliberation and consideration that it actually is awesome that downvotes are public and it makes for a much more responsible voting environment overall. To suffer the problems of bots and agitators is not preferable to this small but meaningful way of encouraging highlighting the opinions of actual human beings more democratically
I’m in that minority too.
Votes impact visibility of content.
Obviously, we should try to move from the up/down system to a more granular one, but for now it seems fair to call out people who abuse the system by systematically downvoting content they disagree with.
If you don’t like a community, just block it and move on. If a comment or post breaks the rules, report it.
When you wrestle a pig, you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it. Some people aren’t worth arguing with. Down voting because a comment adds nothing to the discussion also often gets mistaken for down voting because you disagree, especially if the person being down voted is a troll just looking for ANY response to feed their need to fight.
Some people aren’t worth arguing with. D
Agree, but then just ignore their posts?
Really, how dare we downvote someone on their own server? It’s silencing and undemocratic and they have no real arguments and are all American puppets anyway.
This user and those who agree with them are the only reasonable people. In fact, agreeing with them is the only way to be reasonable. \s
ITT:
“Downvotes are spam! (12)”
“I think it’s a little more nuanced than that (-7)”
Just got banned for calling out a troll
I’d love to know, as this individual’s instance is one I’d love to block, I don’t want to run into them in the wilds of Lemmy if it could be helped. They’ve got to have a lot of weird takes that I simply don’t want to see.
You would be doing yourself and the instance a favour.
Does your post have anything to do with this: https://vegantheoryclub.org/post/353815
No need to block, I know exactly who that is.
I do think it’s unfortunate that votes aren’t public to non-instance-owners. That’d be a nice thing to change. I might see if I can find any existing tickets on the topic or whatever.
(Sorry, I know it’s weird to make two top-level comments on the same post, but this one’s sufficiently unrelated to my other one, I figured it made sense.)
What do you mean votes aren’t public? I see the up vote / down vote on this comment in fact.
Everyone can see the count of both upvotes and downvotes. But instance owners can also see the usernames of who upvoted and who downvoted a given post/comment. (Probably also the list of all posts/comments a given user has upvoted/downvoted, I think?) And not just users on the same instance. Users from other instances too.
I think I’ve heard that the usernames of users who upvoted/downvoted things are also public info on Kbin. (Not just to instance owners, but also to regular users.)
Up/Downvotes usernames are publicly visible via the API to everyone. Kbin shows users this, lemmy does not.
Ah. Ok. I might see if I can track down specifically which endpoint that is at some point.
Only upvotes
On stock Kbin, you could see the usernames of whoever downvoted you. But it also only synced downvotes from within its own instance, so you wouldn’t see downvotes on your posts if the were from outside instances. I think that may be a server-side setting that Ernest had enabled on Kbin.social, so I think Kbin can be configured for either option.
I believe that technically, the list of users who downvote is public on all instances, but it requires having some means of pulling that data out of the API, as it’s usually not displayed in the default web UI.
I’ve looked around a bit at the API and haven’t found it, but I didn’t look too exhaustively. I might look again when I get a second.
Mods can to from the back-end but the front-end hasn’t caught up yet with the feature: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4392
Good to know. Looks like that backend change is in Lemmy version 0.19.4 and newer (which is why it didn’t work with a
{"error":"not_an_admin"}
when I ran a test on Lemmy.World which is still on 0.19.3 using a post in a community I’m a mod of). Thanks for pointing me to that PR.You are welcome!
You can’t block an instance, can you? (I mean as a user, not an instance owner.) Except by blocking all communities on said instance, of course.
Edit: Ah. I see it now. In Lemmy-UI, under settings, hit the “blocks” tab and scroll down. Thanks, folks.
You can, at least partially.
If your instance is on 0.19.0 or above, you can block instances at the user level. You won’t see posts from any community there, but you will see posts from users there to communities on other instances, and you will still see comments from users on that instance.
It basically works as a “block all communities from this instance”.
You can. I have a couple instances blocked, like that yiff one and the porn one.
Which instance? Just want to know so I can avoid it.
You can search for the text if you want (which should find it for you), but I’m not here to out anyone. I just thought the crazy-ass response was hilarious and worthy of a post here.
I just thought the crazy-ass response was hilarious and worthy of a post here.
Not sure their reaction deserves such derogatory terms.
I post in a few non-English communities. There was a time when posts would instantly get downvoted, most probably because people didn’t speak the language and did not know how to configure it in their settings. As a consequence, the content would usually get buried, when not completely vanish from the feeds (there was a bug at the time that wouldn’t show any post with 0 votes)
I can imagine what it would feel like if I were to have “controversial” stances, and where people would systematically downvote by content. That’s borderline harassment, and can frustrate quite fast.
As I said in another comment: if you don’t like a community, block it and move on. As long as content is not illegal or breaks any regulations, just let the people be. What is the point of purposely go to a community you have nothing to do with just to downvote stuff?
I can understand the reaction of the OP here.
On top of that, as Lemmy is so small that they got instantly identified, that makes things even worse.
:sigh: So i’ll just put all the cards on the table here.
-
I was subscribed to the community, so it wasn’t a drive-by downvote.
-
I’m pretty positive (99.9999999% sure) language barrier was not the issue. What was stated in the comment was very clear, ignorant, and broadly stereotyping (not to mention offensive).
-
I didn’t even downvote the post. I downvoted the ignorant, broadly stereotyping, offensive comment by the OOP.
-
I didn’t even reply to the offensive comment because I don’t have time, energy, or enough fucks to give for such an ignorant take.
-
OOP decides to put anyone who downvoted them on blast.
-
OOP of that (which I am still tactful enough to keep anonymous), has DM’d me twice and insulted me.
-
OOP deletes the whole post and pops in here to play the victim. But that’s on me for letting them get away with that. I was trying to be tactful and not call anyone out when I should have taken screenshots of the whole thing.
The real Fedidrama was the drama we made along the way 😂
Thank you for your comment.
I would just suggest refraining from using words such as “crazy” or “crazy-ass”.
The admin could be power tripping, but their actions would speak for themselves, no need to add this kind of terms.
The problem with this euphemism treadmill is that we do need to interact with people for whom this label is a useful warning. People tried pushing “wild” as if that’s not the same damn issue. In ten years it’d go ‘how dare you use dehumanizing animalistic terms, just because that person escalates every negative interaction into a vicious counter-attack.’ Even dry terms like “unreasonable” see performative scoffing in rebuke.
British journalists aren’t allowed to say “drunk,” but still need to describe when a politician stumbles out of a pub and picks a fight with a trashcan. On forums like this, identifying someone as a troll can be treated like a slur, even though trolling is against the same rules, using the same word. Sometimes the only problems solved by changing how we talk about stuff are the problems caused by how we talk about stuff. If we’re bluntly describing something that already exists - it doesn’t just go away.
Some people have brain problems. That’s real. Occasionally, we all have to deal with that. Shorthand for the typical behaviors associated with common forms will emerge no matter which words we taboo.
These labels aren’t even rooted in medical terminology - nobody’s ever been diagnosed with “nuts” or given a prescription for “crazed.” These started as analogy-based insults for the behavior of neurotypical assholes, and were later applied to people with brain problems. Crazy is already the polite alternative. Calling someone shitty for their shitty behavior might be essentialist, but it’s not ableist. It’s about their shitty behavior. Even when someone can’t help it, they’re still doing it. Managing the consequences is a lot easier if someone warns you it’s gonna happen.
I tried to resolve this politely with you but you instead ignored my message while causing more drama creating comments like this. Therefore I will not engage with you or your instance any further for your display of immaturity as I will be blocking both.
You need to listen to people in the global south who are making valid criticisms of the United States which has used violent imperialism to get its way like how they did with Cuba, Guatemala, Iraq and Palestine.

How do you search text across instances
So what that made me mad? And you are aware that it does? Is it really nice to post this stuff even when its “blurred” so people can laugh at me? Is that really an adult thing to do? You absolutely are trying to call me out, you are being cruel. If you don’t like what I have to say block me and move on, what you did is vicious and mean spirited.
Why bother participating and paying for this when I’m treated like shit by drive by people, like yourself. You even participated in my content but as soon as I’m not lock step in support of your fascist government and show any kind of emotions, I’m crazy. Never mind I have a stressful job, never mind that I am lonely and set this up to keep up with my friends and now just to get shit on by anonymous. Never mind my family has been repeatedly victimized by the US government. I didn’t meet your standards so now you must ridicule me, denigrate me as crazy and get a crowd of people to laugh?
Delete this post and fuck off. Leave me, my instance and my friends who use this the fuck alone. I defederated your instance and will block you after this. Feel free to post this publicly and denigrate me some more if you need to with your crew of mean spirited people like yourself who must silence everything and call it crazy for being different.
The only crazy-ass thing is someone who is supposedly an adult acting like a child and being cruel. Go away.
I’m with you on this one, sorry for what happened, seems very harsh indeed.
The instance could use less meat eaters arguing for their immoral lifestyle.
A hypocritical coward.
Nah the guy in the post is a brave man standing up for the victims of speciesism and colonialism.
This is unprofessional admin behaviour. No one is crazy, it’s ableist to claim anyone is such.
Good times were had by all.

Humans dont need to eat meat as you can get your b12 from fortified foods and supplements. You’re not entitled to the flesh and secretions of others because of taste buds. Also there is no need for name calling here, we’re adults.
you don’t know what anyone else needs

I had a hand in the conversation in the screenshot, so I’m guessing they are salty.

Yeah, I blocked and moved on.
