Think I will roll with Framework next. But also looking to max the frames out need the best mobile amd gpu which maybe in the Asus only? Probably their Linux support sucks…

I can second the framework laptops. I got the 16 inch one about 9 months ago. I got it pretty bare bones (one stick of 16gig ram , no GPU, ect) and have been slowly buying parts as I have money for it. Got 32 gigs of ram and the dedicated GPU now.

Been running Linux mint on it since day one, had no issues with it at all, runs like butter, I even got the finger print scanner on the power button to work with a couple commands in the terminal.

The 13 inch doesn’t have a dedicated GPU, but the 16 inch has a slot for one. They’re only on the first gen for the 16 inch, but they’ve had 3 or 4 the 13 inch, and so far people have been able to swap in the new components in to the old frames, so it seems likely that trend will continue with the 16.

Framework 16 sounds like the way to go. I like the idea of APUs holding their own but seems I have to compromise somewhere to get the latest and best ones.

don’t get an asus. they’ve got terrible Linux support and their vapor chambers are designed to fail after a year and a half of ownership causing cooling to drastically decline in quality

Dang. Now ive heard bad stuff about every laptop maker. Only Framework is allowing us to easily change the parts though so maybe that is the play after all. The only thing is I want the absolute fastest possible gpu cpu AMD only lol. I can maybe compromise for upgradable parts.

I mean with the quality of amd’s CPUs and gpus nowadays you’re really comparing excellent to even more excellent

It is tru but, I kinda want no compromises and love watching tech advance. Rn I get 50-70 fps with dips into 30 on Lethal Company with the AMD 780m. Maybe the next one gets me to 90. Also then maybe battery life starts to improve once the FPS target is reached, stuff like that. But the current state of things is already awesome and definitely playable.

My G14 is still going strong, and it’s 4? 5? years old. I’m the second owner too.

What doesn’t work under Linux? Backlight control, keyboard backlight (including RGB on other models) is well supported, anime matrix works too. I can easily set charge limits, fan speeds and power profiles.

My model doesn’t have a webcam but the built in mics work well.

In that case I may go Asus once the next super fast Amd cpu+gpu lands. Thanks for the heads up.

If you care about upgradability and replacable parts the Framework is awesome, I love mine so far. But you can get a laptop with better parts for cheaper otherwise, so it’s probably worth just finding something that just has a compatible architecture if that aspect of the Framework isn’t a major thing for you. But also I’m typing this after drinking half a bottle of wine so honestly just ignore this entire comment, I don’t want the pressure of you making a financial decision based on this. Ok bye.

Eh, this is all more for future reference than for right now. I can reboot and the problems mostly go away so no real pressure. I type most of my comments under the influence tbh so I am with you there lol. I am the type to complain but work around the problem as much as humanly possible unless the system cannot be fixed. I really would like the Framework. What drew me to Pangolin is the 144hz screen. I think FW has something similar now.
