I mean it’s the UAE Swat Challenge so I assume whatever scenarios they cook up appeals mostly to SWAT perverts. They’re all gasmasking up before entering, I guess the assumption is nerve gas attack or some bullshit where becoming a paraplegic because the chinese cops yeeted you out of the dangerzone so hard your spinal cord fell out still beats death by asphyxiation.

EDIT: Okay they called it a hostage rescue in the serbia attempt so I guess the assumption is this whole thing operates on counter strike logic except you’re not limited to the follow command and everybody is metagaming it

Wish I could draw so I could make a kelly-comic about how in the good old days SWAT was all about fighting cultists, and nowadays it’s just terror (latest fad) attacks with nerve gas liberty-weeping

you mean like the videogames or is there actual SWAT history where their founding moment is like the jonestown cult or whatever?

American police just used to be very worried about satanic cults killing babies. A lot of their training scenarios would revolve around it. Satanic panic type stuff.

There’s this fantastic training movie on surviving edged weapons where information about how quickly a person can close 15 feet of distance, is presented side by side with a scenario of a satanic cult doing ritual human sacrifice. It was everywhere.

There’s still lots of current day training scenarios that revolve around “satanic cult doing something”, but you’d have to go search thru local news for the interviews that mention it, because it’s just taken for granted.

Y’allqaeda was the best piece of nomenclature cooked up on twitter and I’m sad it was just used for single militia instead of being descriptive of the religious right as a whole

I absolutely get where you’re coming from but I never liked the term because to me it smacks of [looking at extremely US-specific problem]: What are we, dirty muslims?

I can see that, but to me it was more like “you guys are super racist and scaremongering about how Muslims will institute Sharia law, but you’re just as violent and religiously dogmatic as the most famous muslim terror group”

Though the other reading is just as valid

Yeah definitely. I’m sure they explained the scenario/challenge before, and this clip doesn’t rehash it. Also the directive of life > limb probably holds for emergencies as you’ve described. Thanks :)

I don’t think they did lmao. The website has 0 information around that and even the VOD somebody else posted here has no info on it in the first 10 minutes, at which the announcer says “I will of course repeat what is necessary to do in the course over the different attempts” or some such. Maybe they reveal the scenario at hour 7.

I don’t think any of it makes sense as a “real world” challenge unless you approach this with SWAT team member cop brain. I’m not gonna claim a police sniper rushing up 4 flights of stairs to hit an impressive shot right after, out of breath, isn’t tense or exciting or whatever, but it is SWAT Team Member Daydream. For an actual police force, at the point where that is necessary to happen you fucked up. Either on the strategical level for the situation or like layers and layers above on a like “this is a government entity with a mission statement”-level.

This challenge and the entire competition tells you nothing about policework other than how the competing teams would fare if they were thrown into action movie situations. It’s impressive displays of skill and athleticism - I mean I don’t think I run half that fast as the chinese dummy cops without sharing a bodyweight dummy with somebody - but at it’s core it’s police porn, not police work.
