In all seriousness, yeah there was probably a reason.
His story is that he wanted to defect because of racism in his unit, and the official story is that he was jailed in South Korea for assault and is facing military charges for it.
To be perfectly honest I don’t see any reason to believe the former unless the latter is thoroughly debunked, as we all know that harrassing (or worse) the locals is a favorite hobby of US troops stationed on foreign bases.
Unless this was a staged thing by the US, I cannot see this ending well for the soldier in any way.
