Okay, I agree with banning contrapoinst posts because it’s been just too much, but this is absolutely NOT what the whole site agreed to after several struggle sessions over this very issue. Please don’t just arbitrarily change the purpose of the entire comm over a couple of annoying posts without talking to the userbase, because that’s the exact behavior that has led to a lot of arguments in the past.

I’d argue it’s not about this place being designed for one specific type of post. The point is not every community should necessarily be filled with hecklers. This place is to heckle. Even if the stuff we’re heckling could possibly also be posted somewhere else, it makes sense to have a sanctioned point and laugh zone so there’s at least room for more serious discussion (y’know, in theory)
edit: to be clear I’m fine with banning contrapoints posts, or really anyone who happens to be clogging up the feed at any given time. could always temporarily pin a quarantine post or something to contain it

This really feeds into my theory that despite how much I love it, Hexbear is probably the online community I’ve ever been in where people get the most fucking pissy about seeing content they don’t like. This is like the 6th time in my tenure here I’ve seen people demand that content be segregated into increasingly niche sub-sub-sub-sub-comms because god fucking forbid you ever see a thread with shit in it you’re not interested in.

I think it is because Hexbear is used by many of its users as a refuge away from the bullshit on the rest of the internet, so they don’t want to see that stuff on hexbear. I’m not sure, I’m not too bothered by any of the slop type comms, and when one is really annoying to me (like fakenews) then I just block it. I would assume anyone who is frustrated by slop content has probably already blocked the comm though, and is more annoyed when non-slop comms have slop in them.
But if that’s the case, why are they on c/slop which is explicitly made for shitting on the rest of internet?

So this is one of those situations where mod discretion “I know it when I see” is better than a blanket ban. With kkkontrapoints, the fundamental problem isn’t her being a well-known poster/influencer/whatever, it’s that she’s obviously saying shit for the engagement. Slop is entertaining when it’s bad takes in earnest, blatant rage bait isn’t entertaining because you feel like you’re just giving them what they want with a takedown of it.
So if a mod thinks a post is rage bait, they should remove it. No penalty against the poster, though.
TBH I don’t think there’s any need to justify banning contrapoints posts because they’re rage bait, because I don’t know if they even are- I can’t read her mind. It’s just that her posts are just her being an asshole in a very boring and predictable way, and it’s not really that fun to make fun of. Trying to ban “rage bait” presumes that the mods have an ability to perfectly discern the motives of whoever gets posted here, and that’s not really a good framework.

I get your point, there’s always a potential can of worms when something is up to the vibes of the mod star chamber rather than a cut and dry rule. However, this change is just as subjective, it’s mod discretion as to how many followers one needs to be “influential” (especially given how many influencers pay for bot followers).
She’s just boring. She’s mostly smug, which isn’t particularly interesting to me. The best slop have a degree of unhinginess to it, and Contra just doesn’t make that threshold.

I’m fine if those posts go to another comm or whatever but something I find kind of annoying about moderation on this site is that decisions affecting everyone are made after 1 or 2 people complain about something. Not every bit of disagreement needs to be turned into months-long debated policy or requires significant action/change.

Hey, I didn’t mean to be so harsh toward you personally, so sorry if it came off that way. I’m also not actually annoyed, I should have something like ‘silly’ instead. It just seems like stuff like this happens a lot where in our quest to be as welcoming to as many groups of people as possible and listen to as many voices as possible, we elevate complaints to a grand degree that they don’t always deserve. Sometimes they definitely do.
Then on the flipside, we get mods suggesting they step down after some minor mistake. It’s just all so dramatic.
