I don’t know too much about Minecraft and especially not Sky Block. But isn’t the implication also that they wasted their Lava by turning it into an Obsidian instead of using water+lava to create a cobble stone generator, thus softlocking their progress entirely?
All versions of skyblock I’ve played have had a way to get lava from nothing but the starting tree, so it’s not a softlock just potentially tedious to get back to that point.
That sounds better than starting with the tree and no chest, meaning you have to do stuff like collect rainwater in a cauldron you made by killing a lot of zombies.

Vanilla skyblock with nothing but a chest is a thing, fear the people who do it.
