I’m convinced it’s the winters that get them

Posting an image during the ten days at the height of summer when Norway gets sunshine, while neglecting the 99% of the year when its cold, dark, wet, and miserable.

Our winters here aren’t much better. We hit -50C for 2 weeks last winter. The only benefit, I suppose is that we get a lot of sun during the winter, as we’re in a rain shadow.

When you step outside, your face hurts. And that’s if it’s not windy. Unless you’re really bundled up, it feels like you’re naked in the cold, and your clothes are like a makeshift tarp you’ve wrapped around yourself.

In these temps anyone will understand how cold can burn.

I slept outside in -42 when I was in the army in Finland. Not a good night’s sleep, I’ll tell you that.

Eh it is a dry cold…

But really after -20 or so its all the same but you get injured quicker.

I have lived in wet winter places (east cost of Canada, Ontario, Quebec) and I like my dry -50 more.

And I thought -6C was cold, fuck me.

To be fair, I honestly found that manageable with just a work uniform and an extra long sleeved shirt.

Ehh there’s not much difference between -6 and-18 you can get warm by doing whatever activity. Somehow -3 to +3 is the hardest to stay warm in. Too much moisture in the air. Below-18 is where the dry cold starts to be tough.

Yeah 0F is -18 and that’s when your Moses starts to stick together when you breath in.

You’re apparently better off swallowing your snot too, since it’s largely condensed water vapor from your own lungs and you’ll dehydrate slower.

The spring and summer is pretty good in Norway. Several weeks with 20+ weather and sunshine. It’s maybe more unstable on the west coast, but Norwegian summers are easily better than the heat wave summers you see south in Europe.

I believe an open mind is a prerequisite for liking metal. It’s not the most accessible genre and kind of a musical acquired taste.

Tell that to all of the white nationalist metal bands out there. Not trying to be snarky but metal has had a massive Nazi problem since day 1. Case in point, the metal genre in the OP is riddled with racist scum

Sadly, being open minded doesn’t automatically make someone smart. But I’ve personally had only good experiences with metal fans, so I’m anecdotally primed to believe what you describe is not a very significant problem, or at least not more widespread than in the general population.

More often than not, I meet another metalhead, instant brother or sister. Tend to be cool people.

We moved this summer using an old box truck. Had a breakdown in the middle of Ohio, stuck at a gas station, no cans or uber. Totally told a kid that was gothed up and covered in tats, “Are you a metalhead? Metalheads are cool people, my kid and I are broke down and need a ride.” Joey was very cool, gave us a ride to the parts store and a hotel, wouldn’t take my money. He likes that Screamo stuff that I’m not real into, we both agree that Maiden, cool jazz, and OTEP are the tits.

For the few assholes: the Dead Kennedys said it best.

Don’t get me wrong, Im a metalhead too and generally agree that metalheads are cool people. But you’re way more likely to find a Nazi at a metal show than almost any other genre. Punk has a Nazi problem too. It’s just the way “outsider” music goes. It attracts everybody on the margins, whether or not they’re open minded. That said, if my car was broken down and I needed help from a stranger, I’d still be looking for the metalheads, punks, goths, jughalos, etc. They’re generally decent people and it’s a shame that we have to deal with shit stains who ruin our collective image

It’s definitely a problem. It’s up to metalheads to handle it as well. Throw their bitch asses out of shows. Give them shit reviews. Any day is a good day to punch a Nazi.

If I had a cruise ship parked there, stinking up the fjord, I would also write a hate song or two.

Fr they are an environmental disaster and they don’t bring any tourist money to the places they destroy. All money is spent within the ship.

I hate to burst your bubble, but not everyone in Norway lives in places like your image.

I think it’s the seven months of winter every year that informs the Scandinavian metal scene as well as the rich and complicated mythical history, also the brewing and drinking traditions.

No. Mayhem’s house is said to have been close to Oslo.

OPs picture is a stock photo from a small city further north, Flåm by Sognefjord.
