Their mistake was not moving the bowl while pouring. Move the target to meet the arrow.
Oh, my favorite. Compensation mechanism that works well enough to be barely functional but never actually solves the fundamental problems in my life.

Do it over a sink, hold both items one in each hand, pour with confidence.
Alternatively, pour it fast enough that the cup doesn’t have time to smell your fear
If it doesn’t work, try, try again, change strategy, try, try again, ask for help.
Use a spoon/fork to direct the flow, the liquid will follow the surface of the spoon, not that of the container
