Yeah, I think “adapted” would be a better term than “designed” in this context.
I’d argue that it’s the perfect word.
And for far far longer than we’ve been living in modern society, evolution designed (in its slapdash, trial-and-error way) us to be the berry-eating cave dwelling mammals we are.
The only difference is that it’s an active design process instead of a pre-planned one.
It’s still not design, though. The term is called “evolution.”
