In my experience the “singular they is grammatically incorrect” mistake is often from people who learned english as a second language, like myself. A significant part of this is because most ESL teachers are frankly not good at teaching

I mean, it’s a convenient pronoun, when you don’t wanna repeat “he or she/his or his” all over again
