Iām currently reading Roland Boerās āSocialism with Chinese characteristicsā (with āThe basic economic system of chinaā queued up afterwards) and it sort of overthrows my entire perspective on marxism, socialism, communism, etc. Iām in favor of equity and equality, human rights and well-being for everyone, but so it seems are the Chinese, and it seems thereās actually a lot of work to that end happening in China. Itās just being obscured by western liberalism. Who knows what Iāll see on the other side. I donāt mean to say that atrocities didnāt or donāt happen, they obviously do. Whatās interesting to me and what other books on China kept from me is that actually Chinese do know about those atrocities. Theyāre fully aware and critize them just as much as we do, just with their own lens instead of a western liberal lens.
It remains to be seen how Iāll think about China, but I can already tell you the situation is much more complex than you might see from a western perspective.
