The precedent is sent. Abducting, killing, striking heads of state is now on the table. Make of that what you will, world.

It’s a huge escalation, people don’t just assassinate heads of state like that, because the people giving the order would be heads of state who don’t want assassinating heads of state to be normalized.

But I guess it is now.

Ukraine would’ve lost a lot of fighting spirit of Russia had managed to take him out. Especially if they managed to capture him.

They actually told Zelensky they weren’t going to target him. Early in the SMO he was afraid to leave his bunker. There’s no point targeting him because he’s not a real leader. The US is pulling all the strings. It’s why Russia doesn’t negotiate with Zelensky and negotiates with the US.

That’s nonsense. Zelensky is a moderate in his own country. He’d likely be replaced by a fascist.

The same goes for Putin. If he were killed, he’d be replaced by a nationalist who would probably drop a nuke in Ukraine.

Both are moderates in their own nations, and neither side desires a more unhinged leader across the table.

One thing I’ve been thinking about is if the rest of the MIC is using Trump to do unpopular stuff on their behalf, and then when he keels over, Dems, European leaders, and others can turn around and declare “a time for healing” or whatever other bullshit they put out while holding onto the imperial gains. This would basically be the same as what happened with Bush Jr. I fucking hate it.

Absolutely, it almost feels like a now or never effort before a democrat inevitably gets in. More than just Bush Jr though, I feel like that’s been the cycle for decades upon decades in most western countries since the 1940’s. The right get in, make a shit load of changes unimpeded, and then democrat equivalents regain a few meaningless scraps. Then the right get in again.

There is a theory out there that Cuba is the ultimate target here (cutting off Cuba from Venezuela economically). I’m not sure I believe that if we’re talking overall strategy but I can see that as Rubio’s personal mission, though.

Not long until the Venezuelan taliban emerge from the caves and stab the occupiers in the throat. At least that’s what I hope for. An insurgency. I don’t care who funds it. I’m a full-blown sociopath at this point and Trump must pay. I hope his supporters protest. If I was in the US right now I’d be visiting all the Trump supporters in their 20s and 30s and I’d tell them to act now. Protest at the White House and call for Trump to be removed.

This is part of a big power competition and that’s the only way to see it. But there will be idiots who think that Trump is great. He’s going to stop the drugs and election fraud by invading venezuela. Wait a few days and see what ridiculous opinions emerge. Americans won’t benefit from this and will lose on the long run. With Chavez he always remained in the country. I think in this case, if it’s true he’s been successfully captured and flown out by the US, it might be over for Maduro. The rest of the government remains.

What happens now is the real question. These people think Machado will peacefully ascend to power and open the floodgates to looting, but the military is Maduro loyal and the people are organized into armed militias.

If the shoe was on the other foot we would issue an ultimatum of 24 hours for the presidents safe return.

I just don’t see how this ends well. Maybe the military sees the writing on the wall and rolls over?

Was treason necessary for his position to be known to the US ahead of time?

Given that the US had intel on Maduro’s location, the necessary steps to capture and extract him were to deny the local air defences, neutralize his personal guard (did he even have one at the time of capture?), and extract. I don’t know how the extraction happened, but it’s not the first time US spec ops carry out an extraction from deep in enemy territory. No reason to think this was impossible without inside collaboration.

Petition to refer to this and all upcoming US wars of imperialism as “special military operations” when talking to libs, just so it will get under their skin by highlighting their opportunistic, selective antiwar and anti-“dictatorship” political posturing.

I’ve seen American chuds argue in the past that the US has never lost a war (this was a long time ago, before Afghanistan and Iraq) because Vietnam wasn’t a war, it was a ”military operation”.

Same here. They still do it, and the even claim that it was a “withdrawal” from Vietnam after achieving their goals (??) and not a defeat as well.

They do something similar for Afghanistan too.

When someone is that deep in the trashcan of ideology I don’t think there’s any reasoning with them tbh. Best to just close the lid and walk away. We can talk about what objectives were achieved in these wars, sure, but if you want me to agree with you that these wars were victories for the US then I’m afraid I’m just not capable of that level of suspension of disbelief.

Kinda hard to sanction the country that prints the currency the world economy uses. If dedollarization had somehow happened, it might be conceivable. Even then, the west is structured, by design, as a hierarchy of subservience to the US, economically, militarily, even ideologically.
edit: I know you were drawing a comparison to the west’s reaction to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine to highlight the hypocrisy. I’m just sayin’.

I want to point out that the reason that Trump kidnapped Maduro is because Trump believes that the US owns Venezuela’s oil fields.

Can’t stand this line being parroted about how ‘8 million refugees fled the Maduro regime’, when the reality is that they fled a country whose economy was being strangled by the USA to the point of collapse. The USA openly admits they were essentially holding the Venezuelan people hostage by destroying the economy - presenting two options: live in poverty or overthrow Maduro.

If this ends in a new right wing Venezuelan comprador government, there will be an ‘economic miracle’, and the west will report that Venezuela has been saved. The reality is that the sanctions would be taken off the economy, and a large extraction of wealth would take place within the oil sector, thus inflating GDP. In the short term, the people of Venezuela will see an increase in quality of life - a quality of life they never would have lost in the first place were it not for U.S encirclement. I’m sure a lot of Venezeulans won’t fight the change in government because it means a (perhaps temporary) reprieve from poverty, and peoples material circumstances are, as we all know, the bottom line.

Libs who were acting like Trump was the spawn of all evil and the sole fascist actor in all of American politics are now buddying up with reactionaries in supporting Trump and invading another sovereign country to steal their resources while pretending it’s all for the greater good? They’ve got Vanessa Neumann - Guaido’s former official ambassador to the UK - on BBC news spouting nonsense about how it’s a non violent operation, and is a restoration of democracy. She said her points unchallenged and then was like ‘as I said in my last 10 televised interviews with you’. Impartial news moment.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don’t post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
