I saw her watching it on TV earlier today and thought “Wait is that Shield Hero, that looks like Shield Hero, but surely she wouldn’t…”

That sounds super uncomfortable. Had some classes with a guy that recommended I watch GATE years ago. Was real cool when I realized the series oscillates between fellating the JDF and ogling teenage harem girls, definitely lowered my opinion of him.

IDK, I have some “socially progressive but not deep into politics”-type friends who said they liked it back when it initially released. I think a lot of people just got engrossed by “pretty animations” and collective hype and just take the “the protagonist ‘learns to be better’ and ‘forms a bond’ with the slave girl” plot point at face value. Like, a lot of people don’t realize the gross framing at work because the story appears to be condemning the bad behavior (even if it’s in a dishonest manner). The backlash to the slavery fetish genre wasn’t as strong at that point so I guess the incel vibes were less obvious back then.

That being said, a lot of the people who are still into the fanbase at this point are probably creeps who are into the slavery.

In addition to what everyone else said, the main antagonist is basically an incel’s stereotype of a woman (someone who uses sexuality to manipulate men and also lies to hurt them). The protagonist changes to “Bitch”/“Whore” via some magical gamer shenanigans, and not only is it framed as a justifiable punishment for her actions, but the fanbase frequently uses those terms to refer to her (check out the subreddit-logo if you want proof).

      Also, in the source material

CW: extremely messed up depiction of SV

the protagonist arranges to have her forcibly married to an evil king who magically tortures and rapes all of his wives to death. This is also framed as a justifiable punishment for her actions.

So yeah, the author is basically a turbo-misogynist.

say no and recommend she watch the executioner and her way of life (isekai about how the correct response from a young woman when a shitty dude gets isekai’d into your world is to murder him and have gay sex instead)

I watched the first episode when it aired and thought “wow finally an isekai that sorta breaks the stereotype of the protagonist being the good guy hero” just for it to fall right back into that stereotype one or two episodes later…

I was mildly interested in the idea of the protag being stuck with a shield and not able to use anything else, forcing them to rely on others. Then they just get demon powers and become the most powerful person anyway 🤷

It doesn’t condone slavery or elaborate incel fever dreams against cancel culture; it just contrives a fiction setting where slavery and elaborate incel fever dreams against cancel culture are cool and good. pathetic
