For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Day of the Beast (1982), a Spanish horror-comedy about a priest who discovers the Antichrist is about to be born, and decides he must become evil by committing as many sins possible to discover its location and kill it. He teams up with a heavy-metal fan and an occult TV host in his quest to save Earth from a Satanic apocalypse. This is the best-regarded film of director Alex de la Iglesia, who is otherwise best-known for the similarly-silly horror The Bar (2017), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

Between the features is Alice Through the Looking-Glass (1982), a 38-minute animated Soviet adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic 1871 novel, and the sequel to Alice in Wonderland (1981), which we watched last week Looks pretty surreal and cool, and there’s a sequel to it, the two cartoons being collectively the magnum opus of animator Yefrem Pruzhanskyi.

After that is Casper (1995), a family film based on the classic comic character Casper the Friendly Ghost. A widowed ghost specialist (Bill Pullman) and his daughter (Christina Ricci) arrive at a mansion in Maine to investigate the four spirits living there, three of them being repulsive slobs and the last being a kind-hearted boy. Uh-oh, what happens when a ghost boy falls in love with a living girl? Also, a pair of thieves wants to rob the house. I guess they mashed together Ghostbusters (1984) and Home Alone (1990) to make this movie. Director Brad Silberling is otherwise best-known for A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004). This was the 7th-highest-grossing film at the US box office in 1995.
