For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007), a Gainax series about a dystopian future in which evil nobles have forced the masses underground with the help of giant superpowered robots. A couple of underground laborers manage to escape to the surface and quickly begin fighting against the evil machines oppressing humanity. Expect the usual anime antics from there, with characters shooting beams and glowing to solve the plot and such. Episodes 1 through 6 tonight.

After that is Fimfarum (2002), a Czech stop-motion anthology in five parts, based on Jan Weirch’s 1960 children’s book of the same name, and using the author’s narration from its LP record release. It tells a series of bizarre, surreal fairy tales, involving such things as transforming into a demon, spending a night in a haunted pub, and hanging out with the devil, all with a cast of grotesque puppets. Directors Vlasta Pospisilova and Aurel Klimt have not done much other than this film and its two sequels. This has received excellent reviews, and is considered a generational classic in Czechia, so let’s check it out.
